The Doom Metal thread

Crowbar seem to release ok albums and great albums alternately, from Time Heals Nothing (great, btw) onwards.

Odd Fellows Rest is the absolute business, imo.

Doom bands I know/care about: CANDLEMASS. I have their entire discog.

Doom bands that suck and I hate: Beyond Dawn

BMD is almost totally influenced by Shades of God - I couldnt comment on later (i.e. shit) Katatonia in much the same way as I can't comment on post one-second Paradise Lost.
The lead guitar playing high single note riffs over the rhythm guitar playing power chord riffs is definitely something Katatonia got from Paradise Lost. I love Paradise Lost up through Icon (and some songs on Draconian Times).

TBH, I really can't get into it. I actually own albums by Eyehategod and Grief. Maybe I just need to give it another chance. I don't dislike it or anything.

sludge was the first kind of doom I got into, thanks to me discovering Eyehategod and The Melvins.

Not Stormcrowfleet, it's rather uplifting. Thergothon is much more like a funeral procession.

I can somehow see your point. Skepticism does seem more upbeat than Thergothon. but I disagree. I mean, its funeral doom for crissakes!

If you listen to Stormcrowfleet and you don't get a feeling of some kind of bitter triumph, then I don't think you're getting the right message out of it. This has been my experience, and the experience of everyone else I've ever seen talk about the album until you right now.

re-listening now. it does seem more upbeat, I get the feeling I want to lift a chalice to the sky and toast the gods.

Doom Metal albums I most like:

Disembowelment - Transcendence Into The Peripheral
Wonderful last track on this one. Everything is as solid as it gets, basically.

Elysian Blaze - Cold Walls & Apparitions
Although not purely doom metal, it beats a heap hands down. Wonderful atmosphere and some great production. Immaculate transitions between tracks 2-3-4.

Esoteric - Epistemological Despondency
My favourite doom metal album. You can relate it to any and whatever mood you're in. The atmosphere mixes wonderfully well with the misanthropic lyrics (more of that prevailant on DIsc 1 than 2). Review.

I despise Acid Bath. must be the vocals. but I like the rest of that NOLA scene.

You're such a bastard when it comes to vocals. When The Kite String Pops is the perfect mix of doom, sludge and death metal.

Can anyone recommend me something that sounds very close to the first two Mourning Beloveth albums? I have yet to find a doom band as extreme as they are who play music as passionate and beautiful as they do. I'm not just looking for extreme doom, I'm looking for extreme doom that is melodic, depressing, beautiful. I know My Dying Bride, early Katatonia, and early Paradise Lost, and early Anathema, but anything else?
