In all honesty, how can people even look at this forum when it's overrun by idiocy (which is seemingly acceptable, don't ask me why) when you have to resist the urge to put people in their place in fear of getting banned? It's ludicrous.
The way the forum is right now makes the retards even more retarded, and the people angry at the retards even angrier. The healthy in-between no longer exists.

Anyway, I'm pretty much borderlining deciding to leave here. Mostly because every discussion here tends to reduce to "(band) is shit", "ZOMG they aren't", "You are all idiots, because (blah blah blah, 2nd-hand-opinion/obvious-fact/subjective-crapola", or something even more pointless.
I can see why a handful of other people have left these forums for others, or to go participate in something potentially constructive.
Shit, the only thing related to Symphony X or Prog Metal I've seen here in a week, is the first page or so of this thread, and a bunch of songs posted in the Now Playing thread.

Anyhow, sometimes the opinions may be blunt, but they are still shared and discussed. So many people here are immature to the point that it's not even worth discussing with them (see anything posted by Ascention, who loves to employ the "I know you are but what am I", also known as the "NO U!" technique to back up his "points"). The thing that no one here seems to understand, or very few people even, is that you CAN have discussion without agreeing with someone, and you can get along with someone without sharing their opinions.
In the seattle scene, i have many good friends who argue with me CONSTANTLY about bands. "WHAT? You liked that album? It was shit." However, next the conversation has to go "It was underproduced, the songwriting was weak, etc. etc." Unless you're completely dense, you understand that this is all opinion, or else it's the stuff that is important to someone. I myself have had arguements where they say an album is better because it's more technical and i say it's worse because the songs are not as strong. We're both right (though my side is subject to opinion in most cases) but we completely disagree.
The thing that gets me is progfans always get all up their own asses about how intelligent they are, as if the music they listen to is supposed to validate that somehow. You know, on the Global Domination forums it's a bunch of long haired, christ-hating death metal fans who consume lots of drugs and/or alcohol, and think the idea of high comedy is penis jokes. These people are still more capable of holding a reasonable conversation/debate without it degenerating into a barb-trading contest like those between Ken and Ascention.
No, you people are completely incapable of civil discussion, nor can you take someones blunt opinion as just that: an opinion. Take, for example, the PoS thread (the fans most guilty of this thinking)

Damn, the second CM album has yet to be released. I wonder if you're a friend of the band and was given a copy, or if you stole it from the internets. Either way, I'm content on waiting until it is properly releaed. The 1st Chapter was my favorite album of 2005, a strong year which featured solid releases from Dream Theater, Shadow Gallery, Epica, Kamelot, Royal Hunt and Frameshift, among others.
Thanks guys, I guess I'd better start at the beginning and work through 'em.
Skip over the first three albums. The production is awful, and the singer leaves much to be desired. I think any album between The 4th Legacy, and Ghost Opera would be an excellent starting point, so long as you listen to Epica before The Black Halo, as already mentioned. My personal favorite, Karma, is sickly underrated from my experience.

Zach, I partially agree with you. Constructive arguments are good when appropriate, but basically all arguments have degraded to slander and trolling. No-one is being civil at all, it's just person A denying anything posted by person B, that they don't agree with, and vice versa.
For example, your quoted post in the PoS vs. Patriotism thread... what you said in that, was what you basically concluded as fact, where it was all subjective. You can't say factually that DG composes bad songs, or is wanky. From my view (and others), he and PoS are basically one of prog's least wanky bands, focusing more on songwriting than trying to impress people and get on the cover of geetar magaz1ne.
In the Perth scene, I wouldn't bother to get in an argument, cause 80% of the metal fans here are Death/Black fanbois, and progressive/power/anything-with-clean-vocals is generally not in style.
Also, not to be purely offensive or anything, but the ones who seem up themselves about being intelligent and 'right' are most of the regular/long-term posters here, who seem to do their best to get in an argument with basically every person who has signed up here in my time... even though most of the posts consist of "I agree with X's opinion [that disagrees with Y's opinion]", or "X, don't you agree that Y is a dickhole cause he has a varying opinion?"

Actually it was released last week both on Frontiers and Laser's Edge because Frontiers are going bust in a month. I had copies from both labels arrive last week. Laser's Edge also put it on itunes.

When I give oneliner zingers, it's because I've tried the paragraph of rational debate and received blind ignorance in response. Not even worth typing more than 4 words to such people. Even then, it's only for entertainment because you know you won't get anywhere productive because all they have to say is NO U or fellate themselves.

No dude, you're right. Mostly. The problem that i see is everyone takes something that is obviously an opinion (such as me saying "hey, DG is an awful vocalist and terrible songwriter, hence me not liking PoS") as fact. It's not fact if you disagree, so i think it's uncalled for when someone jumps right to "you are unintelligent for not liking said band".
I'm not claiming to be mr. mature all the time, but let's be reasonable here... most of my immaturity stems from using phrases that I find funny to describe something. I'm not going to preface every opinion with "this is just my opinion, but..."
And liquid tension... *sigh*, you simply go to prove my point even further. My PoS post gave very valid reasons why i don't like the band, albeit in a "immature" fashion. The response did absolutely nothing to further discussion/debate.
Oh and Dan, this is exactly what i'm talking about people getting all up their own asses. LT there looks down his nose at me because i chose to have posters of bands I like on my wall. How is this childish? I spend more time in my life listening to, writing about, buying and collecting all things metal. This is something that is relavent to my interests and I enjoy surrounding myself with metal. It makes me happy, makes things worth getting up in the morning. It's no different than a chemist having a periodic table mug (which my chemestry teacher had... he was awesome) or a mechanic having different car posters up on their wall.
