Decapitated suck actually. Probably should have used a less bland and more original band than that. No one has a problem with you listening to uber obscure bands. But that metality that comes along with this whole "look at me I know bands you don't" and "ahah you loser you like opeth and in flames, yer like so gay because alot of people know about them and shitzzle" is pretty fucking lame. If you like something, then thats cool, but pulling generalities out of your ass to boost your ego is only going to make everyone here hate you. Which in turn causes a shit ton of bullshit posts from even bigger dumbasses like Dave. Decapitated was just a random death metal band I picked. I'm sorry you don't like them. I have no idea what they sound like, I don't listen to death metal.
I'm pretty sure, 100% sure actually, that I didn't come in here talking about obscure anything. I never pretended that I listen to only super obscure shit. To sum up what I said: "I understand that people listen to bands because people have shitty tastes. Personally I don't like heavy or hair metal." Egotistical, definitely. Bragging about my obscure listening habits? Nope. They aren't that obscure, anyway. I listen to black metal, simple as that.
And I wasn't aware that my goal here should be to make people like me. I'm done being sarcastic - I don't really give a fuck if people like me here or not. I'm sure as shit not going to pretend to like metal that I don't like just to impress some "metalheads".
I'm here to talk about black metal in the black metal threads, and if I happen to wander into threads like this and profess my disdain for accessible metal, I'm sorry for any ill feelings it causes.

Dude, I know. If you would recall the events in this thread, I said that mainstream metal is similar to mainstream pop in regards to the fanbase. Then I said I liked some mainstream pop more than some mainstream metal. Then it became a matter of defending my "metal manlihood" because I didn't like heavy metal. It's not like I came in here and started talking shit about all the popular metal bands.
I'm not here to cause controversy (though it can be fun) and I don't talk shit without having at least some kind of reasoning to back it up.

Well, not all bands are likable, but the 80's Heavy Metal bands were very, very important to metal at the time, and put it on the face of the world. Without 80's metal, there would be no metal we had today, even with the help of Elvis, The Beatles and others. 80's Metal really did begin the metal genre, and it inadvertently spawned many of the metal genres we know and love.
Hell, Black Sabbath was the granddaddy of all Doom music. Cathedral and Candlemass just helped make the Doom sound more apparent and distinguished. But you might not be interested in that genre, i'm sure.
Look, the point is. You don't need to adore the band to appreciate the effect it had on it's culture, or it's important. I'm not a huge fan of Queen by any means, but they did a lot to the rock community, and I appreciate them. A lot of people ripped on Venom when they first started out, but they were massively influential to Black Metal, and that makes them special in their own right.
As for not understanding the buzz about bands like Agalloch, Xasthur, Opeth, etc. It's all about atmosphere, really. Do their notes and rhythms appeal to you? Do you like their message? Sure, you might think they suck Bigfoot's balls on a sweaty day, but odds are that other person's gonna worship them because their music really appeals to them. That's why I love Agalloch, personally, and I mildly like Opeth.
