The Official Good Television Thread

For those interested in True Detective, the name "Carcosa" actually originates in an Ambrose Bierce short story called "An Inhabitant of Carcosa". Chambers took the name from there.

Ahhh nice.

Ein, we need a complex analysis for episode 5 from you. Some Heidegger - time/being, Nietzsche eternal return/ flat circle, maybe some Ray Brassier on death, fit in the whole M theory thingy :)

Here's another nice article on TD. http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2014...isode-5-the-secret-fate-of-all-life-tv-recap/

This series has inspired me to get right back into "weird fiction/cosmic horror" especially H. P. Lovecraft. Right after this season is over I'm ordering these:

I need to see the True Detective show.

Actually just started watching Twin Peaks, a tv series directed by David Lynch. It's a good series, but I have a serious problem with his character development. He can tell a cool/interesting story but I never feel connected to any of the characters. And this is what is happening to this show, and it makes it not fun to watch if you don't care about the characters.

Couldn't disagree more. Most of the characters are likable including the ones with minor roles. How can you not at least like Agent Cooper and Audrey Horne?

I was about to come preach how fucken great True Detctive is. Glad that subject was allready ongoing. It's really the only series that has hooked me after Breaking Bad.

Things get metaphysical in one of the most masterful hours of television since ‘Breaking Bad.’ The HBO series' creator explains the secrets behind the episode. Spoiler alert!

Pizzolatto took a bite of his branzino. "Now, think about all the things Cohle is talking about," he said as he finished chewing. "Is he a man railing against an uncaring god? Or is he a character in a TV show railing against his audience? Aren't we the creatures of that higher dimension? The creatures who can see the totality of his world? After all, we get to see all eight episodes of his life. On a flat screen. And we can watch him live that same life over and over again, the exact same way."

Sounds like you should write it, since you already have the theorists in mind!

Part of me was actually curious if the show will perform a genre shift in the final episode; i.e. switch from a cop procedural that is impressively realistic (and I would say only surreal at its most estranging) to a full-blown multidimensional SF-fest. Blow the wheels off of our expectations.

That said, I would actually be disappointed if it did that, and I doubt the producers would allow it.

What's more interesting is how the show is toying with our expectations in its content - Cohle's continual musings on time as a flat circle, everyone doing what they've already done, the future being in front of you, etc. All of that sounds very similar to later-20th-century literary theory (narratology mainly) and specifically SF-theory. Of course, some modern variants of quantum physics (string theory, M theory) might factor in as well.

I wonder how many viewers realize that the show complements these concepts in a formal manner (the split narration, narrative strands taking place in multiple times, etc.). Finally, if cosmic horror really plays as big of a role as critics anticipate, then what event is going to occur in the series that stands for cosmic horror (absent Cthulhu himself rising from the abyss)?

Getting Game of Thrones season 3 finally :kickass:

Also, if anyone is into it and hasn't seen the South Park GOT trilogy... please do. Do yourself a favor and watch it. I'd daresay it can stand amongst the finest SP material ever, out of all 17 years, and especially compared to the garbage they've been churning out the last few seasons.

Just can't get into GOT; it's too much and I don;t like anything with realms.

It's gay as fuck, but I like Parks & Rec

And I started watching Elementary because old ass Lucy Liu still gives me a stiffy. I actually think she's gotten hotter with age.
Such a bangable 45 year old lady.

My TV watching time is pretty limited and I already have a lineup to watch with the missus. Mad Men is entering its final season, might catch up on True Detective for something else cerebral when it finishes.

I watch Suits for modern snark and drama, and then some CBS comodies for....comedy. HIMYM lost me in the last season. Writing was degrading for the last season and a half and it's dying a slow, painful death in the final season. Totally out of ideas they are - Yoda

Not all that excited about GoT series going forward, given the book direction. The adaptation has been well done, but Martin has bogged down in the most uninteresting of characters and storylines after the most promising start to a series ever. Unfortunate.
