I know that, I just could not help feeling that it was stupid. It was frustrating that she was doing something that led to her death that could so easily have been fixed. Her basis for her decision was flawed and her concern was irrational and unimportant for things that actually mattered to reality. As I said this frustrated me and caused me to react negatively to the story which portrayed her as a hero. I can appreciate it for the cultural context and significance, but the actual story left me with a bad taste.
I had this same feeling about John the Savage in Brave New World, a book which I actually did like. John was such a stupid prude about sex that he ended up alienating himself and finally committing suicide. The reason I liked this book was that it portrayed a valid counter character, Mustapha Mond who is one of my favorite characters ever. The actual story also did not make John look like a hero for doing what he did, it just made him one opponent of a system with many flaws. If the reader felt it was heroic to commit suicide to escape that system, they could come to that conclusion and it easily be argued. If the reader did not, such as I, that could also be argued.
I hope this explained my view better.
