The School/Uni Thread

I learned not to take more than one literature course at a time.

That's impossible for my major. I have two literature courses (19th Century British Fiction and Victorian Literature) and Readings In Literary Theory this semester, so a lot of reading.

I didn't really like Antigone when I read it. If I recall correctly she got all bent out of shape because they weren't going to bury her brother and she ends up dying for it which I thought was retarded.

Well you should understand the historical context. The Greeks believed that if the dead were left unburied, their souls could not cross Styx to Elysium/Tartarus, and their spirits remain in limbo. That's straight out of the Aeneid, you know that.

I know that, I just could not help feeling that it was stupid. It was frustrating that she was doing something that led to her death that could so easily have been fixed. Her basis for her decision was flawed and her concern was irrational and unimportant for things that actually mattered to reality. As I said this frustrated me and caused me to react negatively to the story which portrayed her as a hero. I can appreciate it for the cultural context and significance, but the actual story left me with a bad taste.

I had this same feeling about John the Savage in Brave New World, a book which I actually did like. John was such a stupid prude about sex that he ended up alienating himself and finally committing suicide. The reason I liked this book was that it portrayed a valid counter character, Mustapha Mond who is one of my favorite characters ever. The actual story also did not make John look like a hero for doing what he did, it just made him one opponent of a system with many flaws. If the reader felt it was heroic to commit suicide to escape that system, they could come to that conclusion and it easily be argued. If the reader did not, such as I, that could also be argued.

I hope this explained my view better.

I had my first college class earlier, Classics. Looks like it'll be enjoyable. The Professor seems like me in 50 years. A little goofy with a love for classics. Also he said he was an atheist and was a little uncomfortable with using BC/AD which I thought was cool. I have a European history course in half an hour so hopefully that'll be good.

The thing that sucks about B.C.E. & C.E. though is that it still manages to sync up perfectly with the B.C./A.D. gregorian system...which is obviously deeply rooted in Christianity.

So much for secular neutrality.

I'm pretty sure there was a re-write of that, but as a political statement against the Nazis... ** goes through head **

so today was my first Geology Field Lab meeting. It was pretty intense. a lot of up and down hill hiking. It was 8-530, and when we got back to campus at 530 we had to take a test. The professor is a cool guy, and he let us use our notes on the test. The class is only four Saturdays a semester, so it's a pretty cool way to get the lab out of the way (and do some hiking and camping)

i dont want to hunt down the school/uni thread so ill post this here.

in my US history class there is this really smart alec whitey pants that i hate.he has a borderline caeser haircut and always wears sunglasses and wears Kohls shirts with shit like 'sacasm is the bodys natural defense against stupidity' sirts.

but anyways friday the coach that teaches the class asked if we have anyone with native american heritage in the class, and this kid raises his hand and goes on to say that his grandmother on his father's side was a cherokee! and i just wanted to stand up and yell "you are the school's token poltergeist and you are haunting this school with your whiteness you ghastley ass faggot!" oh i hate school!

edit:thank you mods

I went to DeCordova art museum and sculpture park yesterday. It is located in Lincoln, MA...I carpooled with 6 other people in this kid Greg's car...he's a big metal fan, but unfortunately has no cassette or CD player in his car (that works at least), so we were sans music. Fun times, anyway. We wandered around the museum, laughed at stupid shit, studied art, and sketched some stuff before driving back to the university.
