The School/Uni Thread

IIRC my tuition + fees is around 20k, which my parents are paying. I also got a 500 dollar check from my town for good grades. For Canadian students here it's like 5k, and they complain about it

And we will continue to do so until our tuition is entirely subsidized through taxes. Or at least, I will. :)

Then make sure not to vote Maryland's last governor into office there. I swear he raised tuition by at least 40% every year of his term. If my job weren't paying for most of it, there's no way I'd still be in school.

Where is he running in Canada? And at what level provincial or federal?

FUCK SCHOOL!!!

I am so glad this semester is over next week. I have soooooo much to do before next Wednesday and I keep procrastinating.:erk:

I got the same 500.

I also got the $5,000 Dean's Scholarship from UMaine when I got accepted last January. But they revoked it once I became a Maine legal Maine resident, because that scholarship is only offered to out-of-staters. I still win, though, because instate tuition is like $7,000 while out of state is double that. So being in-state without the scholarship is the better deal.

I am the golden god of procrastination. I had this one course, and there was 15 (short, like 3-4 page) papers to write. On the first day, he goes "I will accept all of the work late, but I would prefer if you hand it in on time..." Right when "late" came out of his mouth is when I made my decision.

"Welp, looks like I'm going to have a very busy day in early December". So, the very last day of that class was on Tuesday morning at 9:30. I did the papers on Monday.

so I just got done surveying close to 160 or 170 high school students for a paper I have to write.

the survey I had them to do was about writing, what kind of writing they do for class, what they think of it, blah blah blah.

got some interesting stuff.

I haven't gone over all the results yet but...

One of the questions I asked was, "How much grammar do you know, and are you confident in your grammar knowledge?" And I got a ton of responses that said, "Well, I know a lot of words and I can spell okay but that's about it." I guess "grammar" in high school is equated with vocabulary and spelling?

The crux of my paper is that we should introduce a creative writing element into English classes. I asked them if they would be receptive to the idea of keeping a journal for class, and in the journal they could write songs, poems, stories, rants or whatever. I also asked if they thought they would benefit from this. A good majority said yes they would be interested and that it could be of some help to them in developing their writing skills.

Exactly. The way you get better at writing is by writing more (and reading more). The only writing the kids ever do is essay writing, and it's that goddamn five paragraph method that has put a chokehold on formal writing and pretty much eliminated any creativity in formal writing.

one of the students said something similar to CC in that the student did something similar in fifth grade and loved it.

Yeah that was my favorite English class ever I think. The teacher was a very interesting guy. Sometime we could write whatever we wanted and sometimes we got a prompt. I also remember one assignment which was to write a native American style folk tale about the origin of something. I wrote it about the origin of the chicken dance and the class voted it the best of the class :D.

The peak of my life :(

probably the best story I ever wrote was in second grade. It was called, 'The Giant Whopper Man', and it was about a man who had a Whopper (or any burger really) for a body. Somehow in the end he battled Zeus and won.

epic.
