The Travel Thread

I assume you are fairly well-off financially?

Not at all. Actually I have about -$200 to my name, so I'm not even broke; I'm beyond broke. Several of my trips have been funded at least partly by money I was awarded from getting run over by cars and car accidents, etc. Plus quite a few of my trips were taken when I didn't have many expenses to worry about, i.e. when I lived with my mother.

edit: Also, traveling doesn't have to be that expensive if you know what you're doing.

I mean, is there a way to get around spending several hundred dollars on plane tickets though? And I'm not sure I'm disciplined enough not to sample the local beverages on a nightly basis.

The plane ticket will always be pretty expensive if you're going overseas (well, at least to Europe. I don't know about other places). I'm not talking about several hundred dollars; I'm talking about anywhere from $900 to over $1000. That's hard to avoid, but sometimes you can get really good deals. Some girl told me she flew to the UK for somewhere around $400-$600 if I remember correctly, which is really cheap. I guess maybe it would matter where you depart from in the states. I live in the southwest, so I would think a flight from here to Europe would be more expensive than one from, say, the east coast to Europe but I'm not sure.

The idea that travel requires money is a myth.

It's easy to get by eating on the cheap, staying in hostels, hitching occasionally, and picking up the occasional piece of work to sustain your income. I've backpacked through Scandinavia, Estonia, Finland, Switzerland, UK, Scotland, Thailand, Malaysia, New Zealand, Mauritius etc with very little savings.

I don't travel to impress people "that I've been there", rather I want to share my experience in case others are interested in going where I've been. I posted those pictures of Europe to get other people interested in going.

And Crash was a fail movie.

I used to live in England when I was around 2 years old. My family went to Spain, France, Sweden, Germany, Italy, and Israel. Of course I don't remember. I've also been to Honduras, Peru, Colombia, Australia, Hong Kong, and mainland China.

After I graduated high school I came with my dad on a business trip to Paris. We sandwiched some time in London and Bruges around our time in Paris and had a lot of fun. Got to see a lot of sights, including a metal store in Bruges and the battlefield of Waterloo (lots of fun for us history types).

A couple years ago I got to go backpacking in the back country at a Boy Scout ranch in New Mexico which was a ton of fun. I've also been on a couple Caribbean cruises because my grandfather is rich and we were celebrating his birthdays.

In the future I would like to visit more places in Europe as well as see more of Canada and America.

You have fun with that man! I'm off to Finland in the morning, and I'm not taking my laptop. So everybody have a swell New Year's Eve, drink too much, and I'll talk to you all in '09!

:headbang:

I got back from the Land of the Midnight Sun yesterday. There were many highlights, but one of the coolest (literally) things that we did was the sauna. An ancient Finnish tradition, you immerse yourself in freezing cold water (they basically make a hole in the ice in a lake and you go in up to your neck) and stay as long as you can (usually ten seconds or a bit more) and then get out and go into the sauna. You repeat this as many times as you want. It was an invigorating experience.

There were other highlights; Stockholm (especially the Modern Art Museum), New Year's Eve (a Finnish metal show), among other things.

We stayed in Turku with my friend's cousin. He married a Finnish girl whom he met while in college in America, and they moved back to Finland together. So it was nice, we had a kind of tour guide and place to stay while there. His wife cooked us traditional Finnish meals, which were delicious. All in all, it was a great way to close out the break.

Now back to school today.

Obviously i'm an Armenian in orgin, so i have been to Armenia. Other places i have been include: Egypt, Kuwait and Malaysia.
