The Travel Thread

Sounds like you had a good time Einherjar. How are the Finnish girls?

 The Finnish girls (and the Swedish girls as well) were great man. Actually, while walking around, my friend nudged me at one point (after observing some very attractive women walking by) and said to me "It's just not fair man. I should have been born here." Very attractive women; and, ironically, very ugly men

We saw lots of awesome stuff while over there. They have some amazing museums. I'll describe some more things we did when I have time.

I got back from the Land of the Midnight Sun yesterday. There were many highlights, but one of the coolest (literally) things that we did was the sauna. An ancient Finnish tradition, you immerse yourself in freezing cold water (they basically make a hole in the ice in a lake and you go in up to your neck) and stay as long as you can (usually ten seconds or a bit more) and then get out and go into the sauna. You repeat this as many times as you want. It was an invigorating experience.

There were other highlights; Stockholm (especially the Modern Art Museum), New Year's Eve (a Finnish metal show), among other things.

We stayed in Turku with my friend's cousin. He married a Finnish girl whom he met while in college in America, and they moved back to Finland together. So it was nice, we had a kind of tour guide and place to stay while there. His wife cooked us traditional Finnish meals, which were delicious. All in all, it was a great way to close out the break.

Now back to school today.

I was in Finland a couple of months ago and I wanted to do the ice bath but didn't get around to organising it. Turku is a pretty area. Did you take the ferry to/from Stockholm? Eight hours through thousands of tiny islands, amazing.

Just got back from Switzerland. Geneva was overrated but I liked Lausanne. The scenery with the mountains around Lake Leman is beautiful. My ass is sore from falling over a lot snowboarding. Too many people around on the slopes for a newbie. Although I did survive my first attempt at a black slope!

my whirl wind trip in dec 07 went through: czech republic, germany, france, austria, hungary, romania

ive also been to norway, qatar, kuwait, japan, okinawa, and canada.

as far as my travel plans go for this year, i think i'm staying stateside. probably florida and maryland. wacken in germany is a long shot, but possible

I wish i could've post pictures, but at that time i didn't have a digital camera, i used those old cameras that you recharge it with films. I don't even have a scanner to scan the pictures. So unlucky.

Yeah, we took the ferry, but it was an overnight trip so we couldn't see much. It was still amazing though. We woke up early in the morning and could barely make out the forested shoreline going by. It was mad surreal.

I'll post some pics soon, I promise. I've been running around for the past couple days, really busy; damn classes.

Okay, I used to know how to post pictures because I've done it in the pics thread. But now every time I try and post some here they only come up small, or only the link shows. How the hell do I post big pictures?

I travl around the U.S quite a bit and I traval to France every year to visit family. I can't speak French but I enjoy it a ton. I will going again this summer.

I've been to Spain, Portugal, Tenerife, New Zealand, Morroco, Pakistan, Ireland, Wales, France and Turkey.

I'd like to visit America but that will have to wait, maybe even until I have a proper job (and therefore maybe everything else that goes with that, so this could be some time seeing as I'm 17).

Zeph: I use Imageshack. It's the one I have always used, and it always worked fine before. Now I can't seem to enlarge the pictures. Is this the best site to use?

The Vasa
Built by Gustav II in honor of his father, Gustav Vasa. The story behind this ship is really interesting. It sank before even making it out of the bay. It was raised, almost fully intact, in the twentieth century (after sinking in the seventeenth century, I think). Because it was in the bay, and the water has no salt content, it was fully preserved in the frigid depths. The reason for it sinking: all older ships had to be weighed down by putting stone in the hull. Unfortunately, the Vasa was built with incorrect proportions, so that when it was weighed down its cannons were so close to the waterline that they were completely useless (as soon as a projectile was fired, it went into the water). So, the shipwrights decided to sacrifice stability in favor of firing capability. Therefore, when the ship encountered a squall about ten minutes out, it tipped over. A lesson to be learned, I think.
