We call those "deer". And yes, even though they are wild deer, most in Nara are quite used to people and very friendly.

If you visit Japan, I know everyone will suggest Kyoto, but fuck that noise. Nara is much better and from what I gather is much more like what Kyoto used to be like. But alas, the collective hive mind that is Japan is not quick to change.
