Kidding. My ex had it and it was a nightmare to deal with. Changed her look and identity constantly. Incredibly jealous all the time. Constantly obsessed with where I was when we weren't together etc etc. I hope she meets or has met a man who can nurture what I couldn't.

How do people listen to early Slayer and stop there in 2024 almost 2025? I'm not even talking about taking the plunge into extreme metal immediately. By the time I was listening to Slayer it wasn't more than a month later that I was at least aware of Bathory, Norwegian black metal and legacy death metal acts. Remember, this is early 2000s internet too. I was mostly getting this information from metal publications.
Think it's just wilful fucking ignorance and lack of overall interest in diving deep into even the most surface level parts of the underground. Either way I'm tired of running into these types of people. Knowing who Bathory is, knowing what metal-archives is, and, frankly, just not being stupid isn't asking a lot from someone who claims to like heavy music.

Always figured people like this just aren't in it like the rest of us and never will be. I had a mate that worshiped Maiden but refused to go a single step further. Wouldn't even give Priest or Sabbath the time of day, let alone any other NWOBHM bands.

Yep, it's always those 1 or 2 band people who are the fucking worst about that.
How about appreciating bands on their own merits instead of comparing every band you hear to your favorite band?

It's annoying and awkward when you find yourself locked into a conversation with someone about music the person you're having it with knows nothing about. Otherwise I wouldn't.
People like that aren't always nice about it either. I try to talk to anyone about music as if they already know the bands I'm mentioning but even that isn't useful when the person is only going to give you a weird look and not even make an effort to take recommendations.
It's FINE to be new to metal or anything else for that matter and you and I both know you are anyway so cut the shit and be humble for once in your life. That's how I got into metal.

I remember having a co-worker who, when we first met, name dropped your typical nu-metal or early 2000s metalcore and I would basically give him work around responses without giving him my actual opinion. Ya know, to be polite, and avoid coming across as a concieted asshole.
Later on he asks me to send him some music I'm into. I send him death metal (might've been Demigod) and it was the typical "can't understand what they're saying, this is just noise, etc." response. Whatever. Later on he starts berating me about the music I share on Facebook, how it's terrible, how he can't last two seconds without shutting it off and how he can't believe someone could like music like that.
It's like "Hey asshole, if I knew you were going to act like this, I would've dusted off my old faithful poser bludgeoning crowbar I haven't used since high school the second you opened your mouth about Killswitch Engage, and Slipknot, and Korn, and As Blood Runs Black and whatever other shit you like that isn't even in the same wheelhouse of what I listen to."
I didn't because I'm not 16 anymore but my point is that being modest and not caring what another person listens to isn't always returned lol. Run into that situation a couple of different times.

Same type of person to cry "gatekeeping" and "elitism" when someone rips on his favorite bands.
There's only one type of person who uses those words. Someone who is insecure about being too much of a wimp to listen to more aggressive, challenging music than the above bands. People make fun of those bands for the same reason you make fun of Demigod. They're totally different styles. The only difference is that your music is significantly gayer and you are significantly gayer for not liking Demigod.

I've solved that problem by not, and I do mean that quite literally, giving a shit about what other people listen to, much less what they think of the music I listen to. Might have helped that my favorite genre is cheesy power metal, which is the last genre to be a fucking gatekeeper about.
