Themed Mixtape Game

I'd say that Nasty Savage is tech-thrash of a variety that probably influenced bands like Atrocity and Demilich as much as anyone.

Self-reminder bump, I'll do this tonight, busy with stuff

Nasty Savage - Penetration Point – awesome weirdo metal, the hooks and groove mislead the listener down a rabbit hole of Atheist-ic melodies and an otherworldly solo, 9/10

Demilich - (Within) The Chamber of Whispering Eyes – first time hearing this remaster, the bass pops out a bit more and sounds great, this is kicking my ass but I double-checked my autism ranking and this one is second-from-bottom, guess the album needs another evaluation, twisty goodness all the way through, 9/10

Maudlin of the Well - Birth Pains of Astral Projection – it’s been forever since I’ve even contemplated listening to these guys, first three minutes did not feel abstract at all and more like the audio equivalent of one of those hyper-saturated paintings of dolphins that middle class women that think they’re middle-upper class buy to hang around their home, I enjoyed a couple minutes of this and it wasn’t that offensive, but still not exciting, actually that guitar solo was pretty laughable, why are Swedes so fucking kitsch? wait, they’re from Boston? same difference I guess, 4/10

Astharoth - Mirror's World – one of those bands I’ve tried getting into but I can’t hear what everyone else does, yeah the leads are kind of chilly and interesting but to me they seem to clearly be third-rate by tech-thrash standards, that main riff sounds all wrong, the vocalist is a total amateur and doesn’t even have passion, there are dozens of demo bands ahead of this, 4/10

Lantlôs - Pulse/Surreal – insultingly over-emotive and not metal, 0/10

Atrox - The Beldam of the Bedlam – not one of my favorites from them, it’s mostly alright until the circus bit 6 minutes in, 4/10

Suicidal Tendencies - Trip at the Brain – pretty plain and not really that abstract, 3/10

Ansur - An Exercise in Depth of Field – I wasn’t sure if this was as bad as the Lantlos song until the square dance section, now I’m pretty sure it’s worse, can’t believe I used to like this album, wait the part at 7:30 sounds like Tyrian 2000 or something, that's worth a point, 1/10

Two people who submitted a song to this round haven't rated yet. I have just pm'ed them asking whether they still intend to rate or not.

Nasty Savage - Penetration Point 6.5/10
Demilich - (Within) The Chamber of Whispering Eyes 9/10
Maudlin of the Well - Birth Pains of Astral Projection 4/10 Boring
Astharoth - Mirror's World 6/10 Sounds like every other tech/thrash band
Lantlôs - Pulse/Surreal 3/10 Pretty fucking terrible. This is garbage black metal.
Atrox - The Beldam of the Bedlam 2/10 Jesus Christ...
Suicidal Tendencies - Trip at the Brain 7/10 Pure Metallica riff in the beginning. Kinda cool to actually have a music video on here though. Not bad. Oh and John Cusak!
Ansur - An Exercise in Depth of Field 1/10 Fucking absurd

It’s obvious Demilich have won and by quite a margin. Nasty Savage might have stood a chance were it not for Yoda and Krow.

My pick had the desired effect on HBB at least.

The winner of this round is: Omni

Demilich - (Within) The Chamber of Whispering Eyes @Omni 71,5 (avg. 8,94)
Nasty Savage - Penetration Point @HamburgerBoy 62,5 (avg. 7,81)
Astharoth - Mirror's World @RadicalThrasher 52,5 (avg. 6,56)
Maudlin of the Well - Birth Pains of Astral Projection @Mort Divine 45,5 (avg. 5,69)
Suicidal Tendencies - Trip at the Brain @Sirjack 44,5 (avg. 5,56)
Lantlôs - Pulse/Surreal @Phylactery 33 (avg. 4,13)
Ansur - An Exercise in Depth of Field @Baroque 25,5 (avg. 3,19)

And my own submission:

Atrox - The Beldam of the Bedlam 37,5 (avg. 4,69)

RadicalThrasher told me he was too busy right now and that I shouldn't wait for his rating.

"Trip at the Brain" was only Sirjack's second pick, but I chose it, since his first pick didn't qualify for the metal mixtape game IMO (though it could do so for the non-metal mixtape game). I think even if I had accepted it, it wouldn't have fared much better.

I already guessed that the Atrox-song would be too "weird" for the majority here, but since Atrox are one of my favourite bands and most of their songs would have been on topic in this round, I took the liberty to submit one nevertheless. Assuming that Krow and Omni haven't heard anything by Atrox before, I was surprised in a positive way they seemed to like the song at first listen. "The Beldam of the Bedlam" is possibly one of Atrox' least accessible songs. One of my two alternate choices, the music- and vocal-wise more accessible and moderate "Flesh City" from "Orgasm" might have been less painful for all those who disliked "The Beldam of the Bedlam", whereas they'd have disliked "Lizard Dance" from "Contentum" most likely even more because of the vocal lines.

@Baroque: While I'm one of the few here who actually do like Nightwish (well, mostly "Oceanborn", to a lesser extent "Imaginaerum", the debut and otherwise some songs here and there), I wonder where the "nightwishy" parts in "The Beldam of the Bedlam" are to be found. Could you specify them for me?

@Omni: How much do you like Kate Bush's album "The Dreaming"? (I know you like her debut album.) I'm just asking, because I think people who like Kate Bush's vocals on that album are less likely to feel offended by Monika's vocals on "Contentum" and "Terrestrials".

I don't even particularly like my pick, although I don't think it's as bad as most people rated it. I mainly wanted to see HBB's thoughts, but his review was disappointingly short.

Shocked Mort submitted that Maudlin of the Well!

I'm not thrilled about winning this and the non-metal game simultaneously. I haven't thought of a theme yet, but I will come up with one soon. Feel free to make suggestions if you have ideas.

@Burkhard

I like all of the Kate Bush albums that I've heard. I also like a lot of other bizarre female singers such as Diamanda Galás, so few things are too out there for me in the regard.

Can't think of much - nihilism, title tracks (similar to the eponymous songs theme), misanthropy, national socialism, world wars, psychosis, paganism, witchcraft, fictional kingdoms.

I've wanted to do a 'cassettes & 7s' round for a while now. Choose a song by a band that never released a full length album.

@Phylactery in the past, maudlin of the Well was a very well liked band here.
