Update 17/6

Yeah, you pay a tax for public service. It's a fee that you pay once a quarter of around 500 kr and it provides the funding for TV channels, etc. etc. etc. Of course, one of the things that most people do is lie and say that they don't have a TV or any way to watch TV (since dodging taxes is a Swedish national passtime). Because of this, the government spends money trying to encourage people to pay that fee. Hence this movie.

Ah. OK. Thanks for the explanation! Now it all makes a tad more sense, in a very :loco:sort of way.

we have taxes too for national tv. we have to pay about 100 euro each year for the subscription.
some people started to complain, because there's a lot of commercials on national tv and you have to pay equally while pay-tvs have 1/4 of commercials, so people started to do subscriptions for pay-tvs and didn't want to pay the taxes because they don't watch the national tv anymore.
so do you have any idea of what national tv thought up???
they changed the tax , from subscription-tax to possession-tax. that means that if you have a television in your home you have to pay those taxes even if you don't watch the national tv :zombie:
and plus the national tv darkens some programs in the pay-tv, for example the most known pay-tv we have is called SKY. we have about 800 channels plus the national channels that can be seen through the SKY's antenna. when something important happens on the national channels they darken it, so you have to switch off the SKY's decoder to watch those programs.
but the most ridicoulus thing is that if you live in little town where there's no national tv-signal you have to pay the same. a friend of mine who lives in the montains had to pay SKY's subscription because he wasn't able to see the national tv and when an important football match is on the national tv he gets fucked because he cannot see it through the SKY system being it darkened.
that' really mad! :err:

We have the same tax for having a tv in Ireland. I don't have or watch tv so it doesn't effect me.

Yeah, in the USA we're filthy free-market capitalists instead, so our basic TV is free. However, we have to watch a squillion commercials in between, and during, all of our shows. Which I have become adept at tuning out.

Haha, that's not very smart thinking from your government it seems. But that's actually the good thing about national TV in Sweden. There is no commercials at all on the two channels that you actually pay for.
I haven't paid in a couple of years, but since I almost never watch TV (we have it stored in a closet most of the time anyway) I don't feel bad about it either...

Aaaaaaaaaand so we got off topic on this thread - anyone surprised? :p

please explain me one thing about american programes.
are all american idiots or what?
i sometimes watch some thrashy programs like american idol or extreme makeover home edition....and they repeat the same concept to infinity, they make summaries of the programe each 15 minutes....
my memory isn't that bad that i'm not able to remember what have happened 15 minutes ago :guh: i find it very boring because there are 30 minutes of real show inside one hour of program!!!!

I don't understand how Americas can watch tv, we have ads like every 15 minutes, but they have them ever 7. I'd go insane with that many ads in an hour!

No, but TV (like newspapers) are made for the lowest common denominator. Also, they tend to repeat things because of the assumption that people are going to tune in partways through and they tend to also repeat things after every commercial break. Because American TV has a commercial break every 5 minutes or so, then you end up with a lot of repetition, plus one BIG repetition in the middle in order to fill in anyone who's tuned in halfway through about what has happened.

And yeah, I have trouble understanding any kind of TV watching at all. The only thing I watch is series on DVD. I have pretty much no tolerance for commercials at all and with the exception of American football I pretty much turn off any TV channel that has commercials. I've been watching the world cup on BBC every time it's on TV4 here because I find the commercials to be so utterly annoying.

I find reality shows to be particularly intellectually insulting and I can't fathom ever even tuning into one.

I like the commercial free channels it makes me all warm inside. I'm also a big fan of the BBC, seriously quality programming when you compare it with anything they do in the US.

On the other hand, TV4 can kiss my ass. Especially their world cup coverage has been just pathetic.

My sambo got bullied by the TV-license guy at the door so she ended up being forced to pay for it. They actually called me up to bully me about why I haven't paid mine, seriously. Anyway, though, we have a TV but we don't actually have a receiver cable so we shouldn't be forced to pay it at all. I think it's utterly crap that we have to when we can't actually watch it.. but that said: I'm able to watch Debatt and things like online and I do support public service (Yay socialism!), so I don't feel bad about having to cough up my half of the license fee every 3 months.

When I in fact watch TV, I also enjoy SVT the most - and I agree with you about the BBC-produced quality as well.

Yeah, me and my sambo have been bullied by Radiotjänst as well so I feel with you. It takes a couple of phone calls till they stop pestering you, but I'm sure you knew that. I did pay a couple of years ago, but since we very seldom watch - I don't feel bad about not paying.

Haha, no. All americans aren't idiots. See, like yourself and a few other members on these forums, most americans are just ignorant and bored. This causes them to do silly things, like waste a whole lot of time in front of a monitor. So, I guess staring at a computer monitor for hours on end makes you a better person? And bashing an entire country, filled with millions of different people of whom you know nothing about, makes your arguments valid? It's no wonder why I rarely come here to read about new Vintersorg stuff...theirs no control over these threads.

i do not put myself on a higher level, because i've admitted that i watch those programs sometimes, so from where your idea is born, i don't know. but maybe i have something you don't have, the so called ability to not take myself and other people's talk too seriously, without feeling offended, call it irony or however you want. :)
i have nothing against americans, nothing against anyone, and i'm the first one who says that italians are often stupid and often do stupid things :loco:. i think it's in human nature to do silly things, whatever nationality you belong.

for me, staying in front of a pc isn't always a waste of time, it depends from what you do in front of this monitor. but also in this case everyone is free to waste his time however he/she wants, becuase if you like what're your doing, maybe it's not really a waste of time :)

i just pointed out this biiiig difference i've noticed between our programs and your programs, and asked why. but i had already an answer in my mind, i think it's because americans do a lot of zapping and those summaries help people to understand what the program is talking about... maybe this difference is just because we aren't big zappers.

anyway i'm sorry if i offended your sensibility

edit: maybe i didn't put enough smilies in my previous speech, next time i'll add an extra amount of smilies ( like these        ) to underline i'm not really angry or upset or whatever. internet talks can be easily misunderstood.

lefay, your kindheartedness never ceases to amaze me! :worship: he would have gotten another kind of reply from me for sure!:Shedevil:though i'll keep my remarks to myself this time... I just want to agree with your post about american tv programs, and add to that that i believe 95% of europeans who ever saw an american program think exactly the same about them.

I watch History and The Food Channel, that's about it for American TV....Oh, and cartoons. The entire world loves cartoons.

I confess - I like some of the commercials.

The local Washington State-only insurance firm Pemco has some funny ads on different stereotypes found in the Pacific Northwest.

This one is particularly metal - it features goats. In downtown Seattle: http://www.youtube.com/user/NorthWestTypes#p/u/19/w9jxa7T6WGQ

So, while the institution of commercials are vile, IMHO some have done a decent job of making them tolerable, at least.

it's not kindheartedness.
it's just that i don't have time/desire to get angry with a person that i don't know, never seen in my life and probably never will, comes here once a year, and with who i don't have any kind of personal relationship (like with you or some other), so this is a WASTE OF TIME for me.
people always gets angry on forums, i really don't see the meaning of this, in the end what you get?
i just reply, with politeness, because i think everyone has the right to say his words.
stop.
