Why the hell does someone think Dream Theater sucks?!

Dream Theater....suck? No way. Besides Opeth, DT is one of my favorite bands and not only that, they are amazing musicians. Their latest cd is a fine example of prog rock/metal at its best.

Well nobody claims they are bad musicians, most would agree that they are pretty damn amazing musicians actually.

The negative comments tend to revolve around the cheesy stuff, the singer Labre (sp?) when he does the higher notes (and a lot of people dont like his voice for any notes!) and a lot of the 'techo' stuff seems very scalar.. running up and down scales. Especially the solos, petrucci does some amazing solos, but then heaps of times the keyboard and guitars are just winding up and down a scale, copying each other exactly.. i personally think it sounds like shit and is overused in their music, but it is pretty technically challenging and some people seem to like ti so thats all that matters.

They are very talented, and they excel in some areas, but as with any bands they arent perfect and some of their songwriting techniques, solowriting techniques and riffs and so on are limited. For many people these things detract from the whole band, and in some cases its the same for me as well.

But overall, yeh, great band, i love some songs, love some bits... and really hate other parts.

Goddamn Dream theater rules!!!!!!!!! Definitely one of my favourite bands. Most of my friends hate Dream Theater though, and reasons why they hate them include:

1. James LaBaie's high vocals
2. The keyboard playing
3. The fact that some of their songs are either ballady or in major keys
4. They find DT to be really cheesy

I don't like every dream theater song, but they have the right attitude: they can play anything and will play anything. You gotta keep an open mind when your a musician and not limit yourself to certain genres or styles. It keeps your music sounding fresh. Now this is something that other dream theater fans obviously know.

Open mindedness is the key fellow Opethians...I know many DT fans that hate Opeth because they can't get past the death growls and the extra long tracks. While others hate DT because of their "cheesiness" and LaBries vocals...

I feel pretty damn good about myself that I can understand and "get" both bands.

I enjoy the death growls as much as I enjoy LaBries vocs.

I love both. Then again, I can listen to DT, Opeth, Rush and Cryptopsy all in a row...
BTW at the moment my favorite song is Voices, and it looks like it won't change for a while... that is such an intense song.

i think they suck, because their Music is an unorganized slop to show off their soloing abilities. Has anyone heard a decent song or composition from them? I know I havent, instead I hear crazy and needless soloing on top of crazy needless soloing. O.k. you guys are incredibly talented, how about writing a song for once.
I also find the singer LaBrie to be unbearable as well.

I just saw them live last friday. The band is absolutely amazing!

Yeah, me too. So you were at Provinssi too. It was maybe the best summer festival I´ve ever attended. Last year´s Tuska wasn´t bad either...

I've given this band a big chance. Listened to them plenty. They are talented, and nice and tight. I can even see past LaBrie's vocals, and Petrucci is damn good.

But... I just can't get into them... I can even enjoy 6DOIT.. but as I travel back through the back catalogue, I just cringe.. and then I don't listen to them.

They don't suck. I just don't like them..

~ Your opinion. Unrganized slop? Just because you can't understand their compositions, doesn't mean that they can't right a decent song. One of the repliers above noted the song, Voices...I suggest you can stop right there and find a greatly composed song which surpasses decency.

I think that people also dislike the fact that they could do much better. As musicians, i think all could do much more elaborated stuff and for some reason they dont, perhaps because they dont wanna sound too wanky ( yes ive listened to more DT lately and is not that shreddy or wanky, it could me 100x worst )

I'm with Misanthrope... Dream Theater could be A LOT more wanky and A LOT more technical but they are really trying hard to put out good music. I see SDOIT as a transitional cd and a very bad ass one at that... it's not their greatest but I think their next one they will spend more time on the writing process.

Also Dream Theater is the reason I got into progressive music.. before I was a prog rock snob I was a shred rock snob.. Petrucci is still my favorite guitarist though he is not the fastest or most technical.

My holy trinity for music is Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation, and Opeth with Pain of Salvation at the top most of the time.

Anyway whoever said they don't write songs you should give a listen to the highly underrated(even by me) Falling Into Infinity.. might not be the best songs they've written but it's a definite attempt to focus on songwriting as opposed to awesome progressive metal works.

This quote also works for me since I put up with these two styles of singing but I would like the music ALOT more if these two factors were eliminated!

I can't wait for an Opeth disc without the growls!
