Why the hell does someone think Dream Theater sucks?!

all you have to do is look at Petruccis leads in Images and Words and Awake...then look at them in SFAM, and 6DOIT, if you have any grasp of musical theory you will know musiclly the Petrucci that wrote and composed the earlier leads and riffs, and the Petrucci that is playing nowadays, are COMPLETELY differnt people musiclly. I dont wanna be a prog nerd and systematiccly break down every note to explain this, but it all comes down to a matter of taste, many people seem to prefer the new DT over the old, I happen to like the old better. This is not to say the new DT sucks, it just doesnt touch me as much as early DT did.

DT drew me into prog metal, and that's been my metal mainstay since. However, since Kevin Moore left the band, I've lost interest. They lost their edge, and became a dull prog rock band with a flaming ex-keyboardist named Sherinian to boot.

And i couldn't have said this better myself:

their music just doesn't appeal to me.

I love Dream Theater. One of my favorite metal bands (can't decide between them, Opeth, and Metallica). I don't really like Rudess's style much, he has a really annoying solo tone that he ALWAYS uses. Derek Sherinian had the best sound and the best tone, and I think Kevin just brought more emotion to the band. I thouroughly enjoy all the albums, and I don't really find them all that pretentious or wanky. I must say that Images and Words is probably my favorite album, with Scenes From a Memory just behind it. Six Degrees is good on a song to song basis, but as an album I'm not so sure. I don't really listen to the second disc all that much...

I've heard a few songs by them. The playing was very impressive, and I can tell that the members are obviously very good at their playing. I probably haven't listened to enough of their stuff, but the music felt overtechnical. It was something that felt like it may be worth a look down a line, but it was not something I'd appreciate so easily although I did like the song "Hollow Years" very much. On an acoustic, it didn't feel overtechnical at all.

is it just me or was disconnected fates warning's worst cd? we all know that they are capable of better (AWAKEN THE GAURDIAN!!! \m/:mad: \m/)

Nope, it´s definitely not just you.. I agree completely. I really didn´t like "Disconnected". "Awaken The Guardian" is my favourite FATES WARNING album of all time.

It depends. Pull Me Under was the first song I ever heard from DT. I never heard skills like that before. I was really impressed.

Years later when I listen to them, it seems like they've "topped out". I feel like I've heard their best a million times already. I don't expect any surprises because of it. No anticipation. I agree there's not much direction - it's all over the place.

Once that seemed great. Incredible even. I still think what they can do is incredible. It's just, I've lost interest in what it is that they aim to be.

have only heard images and metropolis, they still suck, not until they can compose music that makes sense, and is not just over the top may i say masturbation, will dream theater not suck

There isn't that much masturbation. Being complex and technical does not equate wankiness.

Like I said Thorn I don't agree with.. but of course I haven't gone and analyzed his leads from days of yore and today because it's not my style. I do love Petrucci though.. him and DiMeola are probably my two favorite guitarists (notice I did not say composers).. Shawn Lane might be too but I can't ever find a damn cd.. the video alone I have though is proof of his godliness.

Anyway.. I also prefer the DT of yesteryear.. Images and Words is in my top three albums of all time.

Also Jordan had very little to contribute to SFAM... sorry dude.. that much I am almost positive about. He did have much more to contribute to the new disc though.. ie. overture.

i think they suck, because their Music is an unorganized slop to show off their soloing abilities. Has anyone heard a decent song or composition from them? I know I havent, instead I hear crazy and needless soloing on top of crazy needless soloing. O.k. you guys are incredibly talented, how about writing a song for once.
I also find the singer LaBrie to be unbearable as well.
So you haven't ever actually listened to them...

Yeah, me too. So you were at Provinssi too. It was maybe the best summer festival I´ve ever attended. Last year´s Tuska wasn´t bad either...
I think Provinssi is THE number one. I don't like metal-festivals like Tuska or Nummirock because the people are so damn aggressive and 'dark' that they try their best not to have fun! And now that Provinssi had DT, Slayer and Rammstein, well... yeah! :)

I've seen DT twice and both times they were musically flawless... I do miss Kevin Moore's songwriting too tho.
Its too bad someone as huge as DT or even a band like Rush couldn't take out Opeth on a real tour. They would be huge. I could envision them being a cult band like Phish or even Grateful Dead. I know I would try to follow them around on tour! I remember reading a post on the Megadeth forum that Dave Mustaine was a huge Opeth fan and that he wanted to take them out on tour as a support act. That would have been amazing! Its too bad that will never happen now that Dave's arm gave out on him and forced their demise. I just hope Mikael never stops making music because of financial reasons such as selling his amp to pay his fucking rent! That right there is just totally unacceptable. I wish them nothing but success.. In fact- I'd like to see them become a huge band - maybe even play on TRL! hahaha Seriously- fuck that "oh you sold out because your on MTV-shit!" As long as they keep doing what theyre doing- I will be there waiting in line for a cd and concert ticket.

Opeth's financial troubles are th reason I buy all the re issues, and remasters...Its a shame my favorite band, and more importantly my favorite musician has to sell his amp to pay his rent...Well, at least hes endorsed now =\, I never new Mustaine was into Opeth...hmm awesome.

Yeh Ive seen DT at least 12 times live, I was even at the suprise show in NYC in January, the suprise show they fucked up alot, but thatw as expected...lol it was funnyw atching them stop a song, and be like, umm we fucke dthat up lets start again hehe..especially when Labrie was MIA from the stage taking a piss.. classic show!
