Wintersun opinions?

The barebones production is really the only detractor from the music for me.
I don't see how you could deny that Wintersun has an extremely clean production. It actually is so clean that it bothers me a bit.

How does Wintersun lack skill?
Songwriting skill, not technical skill. Pretty much any fuckhead can sit in their bedroom for two years with a metronome and come out doing six-string sweeps and eight finger tapping all over the place, but it doesn't necessarily make for interesting music.

don't call them bad when they are clearly skilled musicians.
I have to object to this. Just because a band's music is technical does not shield them from criticism in any way. For example, Braindrill are mind-bogglingly technical, but still pretty shitty.

I've never listened to Children of Bodom because they are a joke on this forum.
You're actually not missing anything, but it's pretty lame of you to not give them a shot just because other people badmouth them...just youtube a song. You'll probably like it, actually.

Do you like Yes? I'm listening to "The Gates of Delirium" atm off of Relayer. Great fucking song.
Dude, Yes fucking rule. South Side of the Sky has some of the most epic parts I've heard in...fuck, ever probably.
They also have some shorter stuff that's just really catchy (Owner of a Lonely Heart, Long Distance Runaround). Great band. Maybe my favorite non-metal band.

Are you sure that you're talking about Wintersun?
Yeah, really. If their music is anything it's predictable.

Christ, how many times to I have to agree with people that technicality does not necessarily = good music? I was simply defending their roles as musicians in opposition to 2 posts attacking their technicality and generalizations that Wintersun, as a whole, are "terrible."

And it's all a matter of opinion when it comes to predictability, but I don't see how Wintersun is predictable at all.

edit: I suppose you're right V5, so I guess the best I can do is support the band to sway the opinions of readers to at least give them a listen :)

You shouldn't have to sway people to do that considering I believe most people here are more than capable to a). take Matt's posts with insane amounts of salt-grains (a whole shaker sometimes) and b). judge things for themselves without letting other people's opinions affect theirs.

Wintersun are totally predictable. Their melodic progressions are entirely scale based, they play everything in multiples of 4, there are few abrupt tempo shifts and when there are they're very obvious, the sort of thing that anyone who listens to a lot of metal will be able to say "oh, they're playing slow but in a moment they'll start playing fast." Their music is familiar the first time through.

Some people like stuff like that. They're not lesser beings, no matter what Matt says (even though he is clearly joking as no one with a brain could believe something like that anyway) :p

But yeah I don't get how anyone could try making the point that Wintersun are melodically and compositionally unpredictable.

No one has to respect other people's tastes. Most of us just do. Matt doesn't. Get over it I guess, or put him on ignore.

I don't aim to sway anyone to like Wintersun, just to give them a chance against the opinions of some of the bigger metalheads on the forum (you and dodens).

I respect people's tastes insofar as I don't chastise people for liking bands that I don't like or not liking bands that I do like, at least not in seriousness. What I don't do is refrain from commenting on the bands in question. I don't care if somebody thinks Wintersun is the greatest band in the world. I respect your right to hold that opinion and to speak accordingly. But you should also respect my right to call Wintersun a gay fucking band. I can't really help it if it so greatly bothers you that I don't like a band that you like or that you can't see beyond my words to realize that I'm only expressing my own opinions and views. I respect the rights of people to like whatever they like, but that doesn't mean that I have to find their taste in music respectable. Why would anybody find respectable somebody's taste in music which represents a fundamental separation from what you yourself view as good? 'Respectable' is, subjectively, that which is within the same fundamental realm of qualities that one looks for in music. For example, if somebody tells me that they really love early Fates Warning, Omen, Attacker, and Griffin, I would find their tastes respectable because this sample of bands not only lines up with bands that I enjoy but also represents the fundamental ideals that I look for in their given musical category. If somebody tells me that they really love Kamelot, Dragonforce, Sonata Arctica, Freedom Call, and Circus Maximus, then I'm not going to find this respectable, because these are bands which represent a fundamental departure from what I think constitutes quality with respect to their given musical category. This has nothing to do with any kind of level of respect for the individual who holds this opinion. I'm not attacking nor judging an individual at all. I'm tired of explaining myself in this way. People need to be less sensitive, less defensive, and less assuming.

Your post was still over the top so I can see where people were coming from in thinking it was kind of stupid/crazy, even if it was not written in "seriousness" (whatever this means to you ;)). I think a simple "This band sucks" post would have been fine. But WHAT DO I KNOW RIGHT

Well personally I much prefer someone giving reasons for disliking something than just saying "this is gay", even if I disagree with those reasons. I think where it goes too far is when he denigrates the musicians' motivations themselves and their fans. There are plenty of more offensive bands out there. I think the ridiculous amount of time Jari is spending on recording the new album alone testifies as to his commitment.

I can not believe you just grouped circus maximus in with the other 4 bands, which are not even in the same category :erk: and I would definitely say that Circus Maximus is in no way a departure from what constitutes quality within the genre of PROGRESSIVE METAL.

Reading this thread I also feel that I might actually fall on the floor and die if I ever get to read your opinion on Vivaldi.

Also, this irked me as well

...Their melodic progressions are entirely scale based...

Anyone with a basic understand of music theory who has ever listened to the solo section of Winter Madness would notice that there are so many modulations it's not even funny. Just because it doesn't sound particularly jarring doesn't mean it isn't there  And this isn't directed at you necessarily but having a degree in classical composition does not make someone an unskilled composer, that's crazy talk.

For the record I don't even like Wintersun.

Dodens has been posting here for a while so I don't know why people are so shocked at his posts. Some of the members on this forum could use some major testicular growth.

I don't post or even read this forum ever, the only forum here I visit is the Sneap forum, and I've just been reminded why.

It's stupid to deny that the man is talented, perhaps he doesn't have the death-metal-elitest brand of talent but hes certainly very good at composing.

That was directed more towards Einherjar who gets butt-hurt by just about every one of Dodens' posts.
