Best/Your favorite technical death metal album

Opeth don't use death metal rhythmic phrasing or structure, so they aren't death metal. They are usually called "extreme progressive metal" but I don't even see them as being particularly "extreme" (it is a vague term though, I admit). I always saw Opeth as progressive metal with rock influence and some harsh vocals. But that is hard to say so I suppose the above notation works :p

Nile are borderline tech/brutal death, but I think they fit more comfortably as just "death metal."

Some bits are definitely death metal...
Nile? Those vocals and blast beats carry them into brutal death territory, I'm pretty sure.

Which is why I said they are borderline. I don't think they really ever become "brutal" or "technical" in total, but the sound is there and so is the influence. You could say that they are the most brutal death metal bands who is currently semi-mainstream, though. I wouldn't be averse to that. However, bands like Wormed make Nile sound like Sonata Arctica in terms of relative brutality tbh.

Opeth hardly ever has parts which are fully integrated death metal combined with progressive subtleties. Thus they are not prog death.

technical, less melody, more brutal and harsh sounding. basically technical guitarwork and song structure.

prog can be anything pushing the boundaries. usually has more melody and nicer on the individual. more innovative etc.

Human
Individual Thought Patterns
The Erosion of Sanity
Nespithe
Reduced to Ashes
None so Vile
Focus
Piece of Time
Breeding the Spawn
Testimony of the Ancient (or maybe Spheres is more tech?)

Oh and throw in a Nile one too....lets say Shrines. I know they verge more on the plain brutal side of things but there's no denying their technical skill.

Oops and I forgot Legion too.

I can agree with this.

Re: Human, I suppose that is agreeable too.

The fact that remains that pretty much every band is technical...I mean, that's part of the genre. But there are bands to whom being technical yet still good at writing songs is their entire essence of being. Nile aren't one of those bands, they're basically just a death metal band who sometimes CAN be more technical than most and CAN be more brutal than a lot, but...it's not always there at all.

My experience was very similar.

I've decided to keep the judging of bands by name to a minimum from now on upon hearing Hacksaw To The Throat's "Wastelands" album. I really wish bands with good music wouldn't name themselves something that gives the impression of "meh" before you even hear them.
I put off listening to Behemoth for a very long time for the same reason. I've never heard of Skymorphosis until now though, but judging by their name, I would give them a listen because it sounds like it should be a symphonic / melodic black metal band.

On a related note, I want to start a "melodic / technical death metal with orchestral influences" band and call it Reproductus Elitis, because our lyrical focus would be evolution. I hope it won't turn too many people away.

Were they facing you to begin with?

That said, I dig it.
Haha, touché

And thanks :)
Skymorphosis is the second album by Gory Blister. It's brilliant.
Oh, okay. Yeah, Gory Blister is a pretty stupid name in my opinion. I probably would have just looked over them without a second thought, but I'll check them out now, thanks to this thread.
