Black Metal.

I enjoy this act:

Sammath is a Dutch furious black metal band, which translates to death metal technique applied to melodic but vicious black metal. Their newest album Godless Arrogance will be released on Hammerheart records in March 2014.

Anyone else a fan of this raging Dutch black/death act? If you like guitaristry, their second-to-last album might be fun, but the new one is just pure metal intensity.

Their latest EP Sommar is fucking unbelievable. 1853 of Lifelover is now a member, and you can hear it. Brilliant, cold, depressive and urban in the same way Lifelover was, but without being a copy. It is however, more black and less poppy, but it still works so perfectly.

I'm shocked by this release - I just cannot fault it. Superb.

I can see what you're saying with The Mantle, but Ashes is all metal except for Parts 1 and 3 of Bloodbirds.

Limbs - metal
Falling Snow - metal
This White Mountain On Which You Will Die - not metal
Fire Above, Ice Below - much more post-rock than metal - the distorted guitars and harsh vocals don't really change this
Not Unlike The Waves - metal
OFIB 1 - not metal
OFIB 2 - most of the song is agalloch again expanding upon their post-rock sound, but is more metal than FAIB so I get calling this song maybe metal
OFIB 3 - obviously not
Scars - nope

so at MOST if you consider OFIB metal, you get 4 out of 9 songs
from how i'm mostly viewing it - 3 out of 9

Scars is a bonus track, so it doesn't count. White mountain is a one minute interlude, how are you gonna give it equal weight to a 10 minute metal song? And the two "border-line" songs aren't metal from start to finish, but definitely have metal parts. It's a metal album.

I'm really digging the sound of this band. The vocals are outstanding, and I'm getting a somewhat post black metal vibe from the tracks I've heard so far. I should give Lifelover a try too, as black metal in the style of Joy Division sounds like it would be amazing.

Yes, it's really good. Definitely give Lifelover a try - one of the few unique bands in black metal (although truly, they cannot be defined properly).

The remaining members of Lifelover have risen to form Kall, and have been recording new material which sounds very promising:

^ That track sounds good, I'll check that album out when it's done.

Who knew that Obsidian Gate is coming out with a new album? I heard the first track last night and it's definitely got a cool Egyptian vibe going, which is gonna be the theme of the album. It's good music, but a bit of a departure from the excellent 'The Nightspectral Voyage." Check it out:

Dude, that Weird Fate track was right on the money. I'm surprised that the group doesn't share members with Farsot or Imperium Dekadenz. Fuckin Germans.

Top notch rec, keep that up, my faithful net servants and altar boys :headbang:

I also wonder about Lifelover. If that band was called Svartbog, or Valquim, would anyone have ever given a shit at all, or would they have been even more popular? I think they were underrated due to a band name that many people automatically shot down and never gave a chance. Lifelover had many great releases.

What's kicking my ass today:

Sammath combines the dark melodic understructure of black metal with the type of charging full-ahead death metal that Fallen Christ or Angelcorpse pioneered (which might descend from Morbid Angel’s “Thy Kingdom Come”).

Godless Arrogance features nearly constant high-intensity rhythmic riffing and finally has a production to match which emphasizes internal harmony but projects vocals and guitars to the forefront, creating an enveloping wall of sound. - Sammath - Godless Arrogance review at Death Metal Underground

You will be able to buy Godless Arrogance after its release on February 3, 2014.

I really liked their debut, Strijd, which was really beautiful on a melodic level but also very violent and had good use of keyboards (a lot like Emperor done by Morbid Angel). Their next two were uneven but more aggressive. This new one is the best of both worlds.

prozak, I want to hear the new Sammath but not so much streaming from my comp right now...will I have to wait till I have time to sit down at the thing?

Yes, Lifelover is cool.

From what I've heard of lifelover, I found annoying. Listened to 1184 yesterday for the first time this winter. Got me wondering, are their other albums that fucking good?

This band has been kicking my ass pretty hard recently, just check out that part around 3:20!

Highly recommended for fans of aggressive yet melodic blackmetal.
