I gave Nachtmystium's 'Instinct: Decay' a couple of spins and am not very impressed. It's all-right but doesn't really break as much ground as psychedelic black metal should. Are there any better offerings by this band?

VBE are one of the best black metal bands ever. Czral is a fucking genius.

Meh. VBE are solid, but generally overrated. Written in Waters is pretty cool, but it's not a masterpiece or anything. And Nachtmystium is usually enjoyable for a few listens and then, like a cheap piece of gum, loses all flavor.

Thought id give it a try knowing that the Avantgarde side of Black metal isnt my forte...Yeah...I just dont get that style at all...Deathspell Omega is about as deep in the waters I go.
