Black Metal.

Sounds good. The vocalist and the music sound a bit more sludge metal than I remember them but it still sounds high quality.

This album rules.

^ was listening to that one a lot a little while ago. I know some people don't like their newer, shinier albums but I think they're enjoyable enough.

New black metal out of Iceland. Very promising stuff

Sounds better than the demo, which I'm sure got more praise than it deserves simply for being Icelandic.

The Cobalt song sounds good too.

There's really not any good books or documentaries on BM because so much of it focuses on the sensationalism of church burnings etc. Rather than the development and styles of the genre.

I see you're unfamiliar with Dayal Patterson's 'Black Metal: Evolution of the Cult' which was published in 2013. It's far and away the best thing ever written on black metal and I strongly recommend you check it out. It's massive, brilliantly written and presented, and he spent years on it. Check it out here for details:

And testimonials from pretty much all the key names in black metal and who are all in it too:

http://www.cultneverdies.com/p/reviews-and-testimonials.html (scroll down a little to read the 'Evolution of the Cult' testimonials).

As for 'Lords of Chaos', in 1999 when I first read it, it was simply fascinating. It has since received a lot of flak due to its sensationalism, but it's pretty hard to write a book expressly on two murders and a suicide without it sounding pretty sensational. I found it very entertaining.

But 'Black Metal: Evolution of the Cult' just leaves it for dead. Patterson has since published more interviews that he's done over the years in a follow-up, slimmer volume called 'Prelude to the Cult' but it's more of an addendum rather than a comparable piece.

His true meisterwerk, however, is definitely 'Evolution of the Cult'.

image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg That Daniel Patterson book is great, though I dunno what's up with him I got a few killer t's from him and had to return an Ulver shirt because it's too small and haven't heard back since...maybe because I'm not on fbook anymore, fuck knows but he can keep it. This Underground Never Dies book is great(and massive), also you might be interested in Hideous Gnosis.

I also forgot to mention the Slayer Mag Diaries by Metalion. It's every edition of the 'Slayer' zine plus a detailed overview of what he was up to around the time of each edition.

Not strictly black metal of course, but I'd say there's an 80% black metal focus throughout. What is also amazing is that he was right there through the development, popularity and commercialisation of black metal, and in my opinion Metalion's story is the most fascinating of the whole Norwegian metal experience.

It's a huge tome and probably my most cherished single volume in my library after a facsimile edition of Shakespeare's First Folio.
