Black Metal.

I very much feel that Hliðskjálf is under-rated, the album is worth it alone just for "Der Tod Wuotans" - after reading the storyline for this composition, you realise just how creative and imaginative Vikernes really is.

The musical representation of the storyline is incredibly accurate (anyone who has knowledge of war-music from the Renaissance and early Baroque periods would probably understand why I say this). Hearing this song alone raised my opinion of Vikernes as a composer overall. I no longer view him as being confined to a Black Metal artist, rather, simply, someone creative and imaginative.

I only like Filosofem.

@Hubster

Yea Varg can write a good song but he is no where near being a truly amazing or extremely talented composer. being a good composer means being able to make a song succeed in multiple different ways and Varg lacked a lot of things. He has never done anything that would push him into something else better than Black Metal.

I try.

Lets face it. Radiohead can write a more complex song that still songs good and is at a much higher caliber of intelligence than the music of Burzum, which is good music. I just hate the mindless praise Varg gets.

Complexity is no character of good composition. Take early composers of the 12th and early 13th centuries, before the Renaissance. Polyphony didn't even exist back then, yet their compositions have stood the test of time based on a lack of complexity.

I feel that Varg's ability to establish himself as a composer outside of metal was cut short by the circumstances in his life, alas, we will never know.

Quite frankly, I think Radiohead gets more mindless, undeserving praise than Burzum, speaking from an underground perspective.

I've only heard the radio BS that RadioHead did, but nothing leads me to think they couldn't compose a great song (non-metal of course).

That being said Varg is still excellent at what he does.

OK Computer is a MUST listen, it is absolutely fantastic in every way.

Abigor isn't an ok band, it's one of the best and most original bm acts of the 90s.

Same for Summoning.
