Black Metal.

I just totally disagree with you. I really like Legends of Evil and Eternal Death, it's really pleasant and nice, but all four songs have a similar structure and are all focused on similar things, and it tends to get a little too melodic for its own good here and there. I guess you'd call this consistent, though, and you'd be right; but, I think SMRC really succeeds in its (what you would call) inconsistency. The flow of the album is extremely strong, every track other than the intros is totally memorable, and if you're following with the extremely awesome booklet, even the intros pack a trance-inducing punch. I think SMRC is an album you can't judge based on individual songs; it's much more of an "album" album. And to me, it's a totally essential future-classic, which Hirilorn's album won't be considered (good as it may be).

I totally agree with this, even if it's considered trendy to still be impressed with that album.

How is Bone Awl "experimental?"

The simplistic/primitive nature of the music is taken to an extreme that might lead some people to label it experimental. I have seen their music described this way and not only do I think it's incorrect, I also dislike the band. Hence the quotation marks in my post around experimental and my labeling them unlistenable.

Suicidal is not the word. Decadence and debauchery would be a more proper stance at describing his music and the imagery that we wishes to make. I think he trying to explain that he and his music is still "dead" or broken, seeing that the music of that albums comes from a pretty long break from releasing material.
What other Mutiilation and French black metal albums/bands would I like since I liked what I heard off Black Millenium?

'legends of evil and eternal death' isn't even fit to lick the boots of SMRC. we're talking really nice, solid BM with a decent amount of nuance and atmosphere vs stuff that tears into new realms and casts a spell and fucking burns into your consciousness. i wonder if many of you will still be listening to hirilorn in a few years (i know i haven't done so all that much after raving about them a few years back), and whether given some effort SRMC would hit you and stay with you. yeah it's a tad flabby round the edges (not as much so as people like to claim) and kind of pretentious, but stuff this wild and ambitious often ends up that way.

and david, you've overplayed the fuck out of SMRC and have been blinded to its awesomeness ;)

(also, iirc the EP that followed 'legends...' was better)

Possibly. I still recognize it as a great album, and certainly one of the finest post-2000, but after delving deeper and deeper into 90s BM and really starting to properly appreciate it I've lost a lot of interest in modern stuff, even that which I used to love. It's been ages, so I'll give it a listen soon and re-evaluate my opinion.

damn. Ares of Aeternus is a fantastic vocalist. never really noticed this before.

The best.

Nixon, I knew there was a reason we were friends.

Um...the fact that it is structurally very progressive yet still "orthodox" (hate this term but...whatever), the entire aesthetic is very dedicated and catered to, built upon and perfected throughout the album. You'd understand more if you could hold the booklet and read the lyrics while listening ;)

Heh, ditto. I'm actually really surprised to 'em so highly rated still.

So I'm ignorant because Marduk are generic? In this case, ignorance is bliss for me. But maybe I should change my mind since they are so popular, right?

"Those of the Unlight" is actually kinda good and you should probably listen to it, but please don't tell anyone I said that, I have a reputation to maintain.
