I think SMRC is fucking amazing, the production actually aids it as well. One of my favourite albums ever, fuck all the haters.

I know. That album is monumental. Really unique too. Especially in the production department. I've never heard a BM album that sounded that thick and fiery before.
I didn't like the production before but it just fucking clicked recently when I gave it a listen again.

I've never had a problem with the production. In fact, that was one of the first aspects of the album I fell in love with. That thick rich guitar tone just might be the greatest one I've ever heard.
Listen to it more. It usually takes several listens to fully "get" it.

They kinda remind me of Ved Buens Ende in that their music is too spaced out/drawn out beyond my merely humble comprehension.

SMRC indeed is a relatively long album, it clocks in at about 77 minutes. Most of the time if an album was that long, I'd lose interest but DSO manage to keep me hooked. I think it's one of the best modern black metal releases personally.

SMRC is great, but it is indeed just too long, and there's a lot of meandering in the second half. I think it definitely loses steam after Third Prayer.

I've never been able to connect with SMRC or any Deathspell Omega for that matter. I think it's because the aspect of black metal that's always appealed to me the least is all the evilness and evil sounding stuff, and that seems to be their forte.
I dig evil sounding riffs which is why I dig DOS. SMRC is definitely pretty evil but also is very avante garde and experimental. It's pretty interesting despite having some masturbation.

Masturbation? I can understand if you'd say that there was masturbation in Fas or Kenose, but I think SMRC, aside from the album length, is perfect.

Evilness aside, on the purely sonic front the band writes quality material--its meldoic, expressive, intense, dynamic, sometimes experimental, and occasionally 'catchy'.
SMRC is too long, but it is great if you are willing to invest some time.

I prefer my music asymmetric. Perfect reflexiveness in sound leads to redundancy, and artists who perform symmetric music usually feel the need to prove something.

But you're overthinking things just as I am.Nothing we say whilst trying to explain our taste to the other side ultimately matters. It's all just words. Words for words' sake.
