Just curious to see how this all pans out. I'm sure I could have added more subgenres, but I tried to keep it simple. Any variation of a subgenre isn't listed. For example, Melodic Death Metal.

Progressive > Thrash > Death > Traditional then the rest.

Though I have some very favourite bands the genres I rate lower.

Kind of a toss-up between trad, thrash, and prog. If I may include progressive-leaning releases from the former two (i.e. Awaken the Guardian, Irae Melanox, both Watchtower albums, etc), then it's easily progressive metal. Otherwise, probably traditional metal.

Pretty stupid to say I have a favorite, but I do think I listen to more Traditional Doom/Heavy Metal than the other genres these days. So I guess I'll vote traditional metal.

I couldn't really choose between DM, BM, and traditional. But I will say that it's damn near impossible for a new DM or traditional metal band nowadays to impress me, whereas black metal is still relatively strong. But how is one to look upon Sad Wings Of Destiny, Don't Break The Oath, Awaken The Guardian and say that their genre of origin is better or worse than that of Altars Of Madness, Onward To Golgotha, or Beyond Sanctorum? Or even De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, or Pure Holocaust?

Black Metal > Stoner/Doom > Death Metal > Sludge/Post-Metal...

(Id like to throw in Crust and Grindcore in there but cant since they arent subgenres of metal)

You know, I was debating adding Grindcore to the poll but I refrained for that exact reason. I think Grind has gotten more 'metal' over the years as opposed to the Grind from the 80's which was more influenced by Hardcore Punk. Napalm Death, Terrorizer, Brutal Truth...they've all adopted a bit of the Death Metal style progressively throughout the years.

Good question.

I'd say black metal > doom/heavy metal > stoner doom > funeral doom > prog metal > death metal > thrash...etc listen to a lot of random shit that kinda falls in between genres too.
