deathcult has more forward momentum and less predictability than the later stuff. way more intuitive and less calculated, which is true of most metal bands’ early work tbh and the main reason it tends to be superior. thing is just too arcane and wild for you sub-mensa level metalheads, only the elite can comprehend.

i mean i adore procession too but it’s basically a more simplistic streamlined version of deathcult for noobs

Listened to Procreation of the Inner Temple, which was better than I thought it would be though inconsistent. Tracks 3 through 5 had basically all the positive traits of their later material with the added bonus of clearer recording. Confessions and a Strange Anxiety might become a favorite of theirs for me. Some of it was kinda sadsack meloshit though. Halfway through From the Lost Years... and this seems like a massive step down, nothing offensive so far but it's really bland, lacks their trademark aspiring technicality and wastes a lot of time on beat-counting riffs and basic chord progressions that sound like post-inspiration Steve Harris.

Listen to The Spell... already. You gave a song from it a 9/10 in the mixtape game and it’s probably the one you have the most chance of liking I reckon.

Also interested in your thoughts on Manifest My Invervention from that one - are the riffs it features the sort of riffs you enjoy mainly.

I haven't heard a Chasm album that wasn't inconsistent as fuck so me loving one song doesn't prove much. I gave Apocalypse a 9/10 as well. I plan on completing the discography anyways.
