I hope you guys aren't getting sick of me yet...

When voting, please keep in mind this is about the guitar tone, not the mixing or playing. ahjteam edited the tracks so all the guitars are at -18db rms, and the drums and bass are at a set volume. Thank you sir!

If you recognise your own work, please keep it to yourself. Usernames will be made public in the end. Please place your vote, and post in the thread with your reasoning! When the poll closes in 3 days, I will post up the EQing graphs and CurveEQ files and single guitar files for the tracks. No usernames yet, those will come after the last round.

I originally also had an X, but I took that out due to shitty recording. There was a delay in the guitars I couldn't figure out.

Wow, some good ones in this batch. U would be SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better if it had more gain, but unfortunately that's a deal-breaker for me; tough to decide between R, V, and W, but R sounds like it's too far from the dustcap (or the impulse used was ;)) and V is just a tad too fizzy, so W gets my vote!

wow! this one felt like a finals round. awesome stuff guys. :worship:

it is very tough for me to pick between R, V, and W. but i keep coming back to R. very full clear and articulate. absolutely top notch tone! :kickass:

Lets hope round 3 and 4 aren't as close as round 1 and 2, or we're going to have a pretty huge final round:D

I went for R. As Marcus said, it might be a little bit undergained, but I found R to have best potential to work in a full mix, it's good. The others, especially W had a ton of mids, which is fine if it's instrumental guitar wanker music but I like 'em a bit more balanced over all, and slightly scooped to leave some room :) Frequency-wise, R is probably close to what I would aim for myself.

Edit: A little more listening and I can add that W seems to be much louder due to the increase in mids compared to R. W sounds as if the guitars are at the focus in the whole mix, very much like an instrumental mix where it's all about the guitars. I'd say W definately would be my choise if I was to make something like that, but for anything else, I'd choose R. R is not as intimidatingly up in my face as W is, therefore it fits better imo.

Voted R but it wasn't difficult all the others are either muffled, fizzy, brittle or undefined...best of the rest.

I don't get it: i have heard way, way better tones on this forum...does that mean that the tone-amp sim-imp dialing experts have not entered this competition? Or that that their tones only sound good with their chugga-chugga riffs??

I voted R without prior looking at the results. Best balance for my taste.
And if I haven't said it before: A big "THANK YOU" to MarkG and the other guys for organising this competition and delivering the files!!!:headbang: Must have been a lot of work...

Not all, but a couple of big names have entered. You'll find out who is who after every round :D

I did the organising and posting, and you're very welcome. I'm learning from this too:D Marcus did a great job with the DI's, BrettT with the backing tracks and ahjteam helped me with matching the track volumes. Couldn't have done it without them. :kickass: Also a thanks to Opeth57 for offering his band tracks. We didn't end up using them, but its the thought that counts.

I think it is mainly because you were not allowed to process (or replace) the bass. It makes a whole lot of difference to the sound. When you mix a song, you don't mix guitars to fit to the rest of the band like in this shootout, you mix the whole band to fit together.
