I bought a new car (the "I wanna be like Gugs" thread)...

Thumbs down on Subaru.

First one I've ever heard of who owned one and said that.

I will say though, that the Outback is the only model of theirs that I had no interest in. It's basically built for rougher terrain and not as practical for everyday driving.

Overall though, Subarus are among the most reliable & safest vehicles on the road.

My factory issued tires are up to 37,000 miles right now without any issues whatsoever.

Wierd considering that you own a Forester and it's essentially the same thing but shorter and taller. Same engine. Same interior bits. Same AWD system. Same ground clearance.

Actually, unless its changed since 2005, the Outback definitely has a higher ground clearance and other subtle differences that make it more suitable for off-roading than any other Subaru model. It's the primary reason why I had no interest in it at the time.

Mine is falling apart. Yours are solid. Glad to hear it. How many miles? Mine starting breaking at 60,000.

I'm at 37,000 right now - never had a single problem and have only had the expenses of normal routine maintenance.

It sounds like you're one of the unlucky ones. Every single automaker (from Dodge to Toyota to whatever) are going to have plenty of cars that don't make the grade. My analyses are generated from places like Edmunds, Cars.com, Consumer Reports, etc. that provide overall general reliability numbers by maker in addition to their own reviews, user reviews, etc. Sorry the Outback hasn't worked out too well for you.

The difference was absolutely greater in 2005 it was at least a full inch or two higher than the Forester. What year is yours?

Regardless - the Outback had around the same reliability, safety records, etc. as the other models I just simply wasn't interested in it due to it being a bit more geared to off-roading and having a bit of a less refined drive than the other models at the time. Period. It had a higher turning circle ratio, different suspension, etc. Perhaps they've remedied many of those differences in the newer models, I dunno, but whatever. I didn't stay away from it because I was afraid it would be unreliable or fall apart way too early, that's for sure.

LOL - hey, if does, I'll be the first to agree with you but it's been great so far and I did my homework when buying.

Anyway, here's some of the differences in the two models in 2005 (my year) that helped me make my decision:

2005 Outback:

Ground Clearance - 8.4 inches
Turning Circle - 35.4 ft
Length - 188.2 inches
Width - 69.7 inches
Weight - 3310 pounds
Wheel Base - 105.1 inches

2005 Forester:

Ground Clearance - 7.5 inches
Turning Circle - 34.8 ft
Length - 175.2 inches
Width - 68.1 inches
Weight - 3090 pounds
Wheel Base - 99.4 inches

It just seemed like a less cumbersome vehicle so I test drove it and loved it.

OK. I'd say I'm now 95% certain it's going to be the Nissan Altima Coupe 3.5 SE CVT, in black, with the premium package (leather, bluetooth, iPod adapter, etc.).

had the CVT tranny in my MC ... loved it ... its a bit weird at first and might feel jerky below 10mph when you are "crawling" but since there are no gears you can floor it and go up to top speed with no gear shift feel at all.

use it in manu/matic for some good fun.

So heres a question for you guys...

Gonna have to buy a car in the next few months... I do not have the money for anything too new.

What I am looking for is an affordable, but semi decent car that can get me daily from Point A to Point B, with moderately decent gas usage.

Suggestions?

Oh, I should mention the reason I am buying a new car is that after the UTA is dropping all buses that go to my area aside from the express to the University. So I'll have to drive to work. The problem is, my current vehicle, a 1993 Ford Ranger, is far beyond its last legs. Everything needs to be replaced, and the cost of rehauling this motherfucker almost exceeds the cost of a vehicle that will run a bit nicer, look quite a bit nicer, and not chug gas like Doomcifer does a beer. Gas is too damn expensive to drive this thing to work once a week... I couldn't imagine every day.

Wow. Don't feel so bad: my 4x4 4.0L Ranger gets 17 mpg MAX and I sometimes have to drive it 100 miles in a day.
Nice basic vehicles these Rangers and the 4x4 is good off-road - not because of the 4x4 system but more because of it's power, I think. Anyway, good luck.

I drive a Volkswagen Passat 1.8T Coupe (If coupe in americaner language is what I think it is) and I'm very happy with it. Looks alright, runs very well, enough engine to blast away a bit at least when needed but not enough to be very expensive etc plus the late 90s/early 00s should be affordable int he states too I guess (mine is '99)
