Haha, true. The likes of Nokturnal Mortum, Drudkh and Infester are a definite no-no.Then again, you can buy Burzum albums(I always thought that Varg is neo-nazi, or something).
I once wanted to order a Skyclad album, and they told me they can't import it due to the somewhat dodgy, extreme ideology of the band

Well I've heard quite a few Skyclad songs (and seen them live) and I think they're more far left than anything else. Socialist.

This poll/thread really became pointless when two completely different classifications got lumped together. A different thread for Sunn O))), Mastodon, Isis, etc. set apart from Iron Maiden, Pantera, Metallica, etc. would make a very slightly interesting thread, but they really have no relevance together; the latter are liked by non-metalheads because of their "classic rock" feel while the former are liked by non-metalheads for an entirely different set of dynamics that links them to non-metal genres like post-rock or indie.

I see what you are saying.

I've heard a few Skyclad songs and got no political/ideological proselytizing whatsoever from the lyrics. The themes seemed to be more abstract and fantastical.

This is a song from their most famous release Prince of the Poverty Line

Civil War Dance

While sons and daughters of the empire
Stained the map red, white and blue
Back at home the storm clouds thundered
Dole queues lengthened - unrest grew
'til the tides of fresh opinion
Washed away the world they knew.

Exchange inhuman wrongs for human rights
This underdog not only barks - it bites!

Take your partners for our civil war dance
Open season on the under worked and overpaid.
Erase the Constitution - a bloody revolution
Is the simplest solution to the problems that they have made.

Children of the urban third world
Breast fed lies and cathode rays
Speak their minds down party chat lines
(they don't have that much to say)
Told nothing of the world we live in
Or that it will be theirs someday.

This system cultivates our lust and greed
With anti-social insecurity.

Take your partners for our civil war dance
Open season on the under worked and overpaid.
Erase the Constitution - a bloody revolution
Is the simplest solution to the problems that they have made.

The preacher tells us all that heaven waits
So pay your "soul tax" when you reach the gates.

Take your partners for our civil war dance
Open season on the under worked and overpaid.
Erase the Constitution - a bloody revolution
Is the simplest solution to the problems that they have made.

Livestock bred to feed the cannon
Hands grown hard with honest toil
Fuel the fires of mass rebellion
Hatred's cauldron starts to boil
They fight for something they believe in
Not another nation's oil.

Britannia cowers in her public school
Once too often now she's waived the rules.

Take your partners for our civil war dance
Open season on the under worked and overpaid.
Erase the Constitution - a bloody revolution
Is the simplest solution to the problems that they have made.

This is a good point

This is honestly the only Skyclad song I can remember hearing. Use used to have the mp3:

The Sky Beneath My Feet

O come ye young of Hamlyn--you who know my tune so well,
Where it beckons you must follow--be it Heaven (be it Hell).
Forget your mothers grieving as I pipe you down the street,
With a shilling in my pocket--and the sky beneath my feet.
Chameleons bask in the 'arc-lite' reflection--awaiting a chance curtain call,
And here from the wings I have watched them and wondered if God does exist
after all.
On life's Ferris Wheel all the dreamers ride free (from the top you can only
go down),
No-one but yourself is to blame if you presume to walk upon water then drown.
Now your bridges are burned--it is time that you learned there is no turning
back,
All your airs and graces should vacate their places for the qualities you lack.
Though empty vessels made most sound--not one wise word was said,
Vainglory hunters seek their prey where angels fear to tread.
FOLLOW ME--follow and I will lead,
With truth that hurts like stick and stone.
When rats that scuttled ships departed--
Birds of a feather sought their own.
To make their dreams a lantern that outshines the brightest star,
Turn whispers into battlecries the winds shall carry far.
When hearts shielded by conviction--keeping beats so pure and strong,
Are at last as one united (a communion of steel--The Sword of Song).
We gathered together as sister and brother to dance when the world was abed,
Until the next dawn in the grey light of morning these lambs to the slaughter
were led
Out of the shadows these vagabonds congregate (those who have stuck to their
guns),
While tinseltown satellites frantically circulate orbiting mirror-ball suns.
I will not play a part in this infantile farce--your offer I decline,
Building walls of pretension to conceal your intentions was just a waste of
time.
Though in your life of make-believe the best things came for free,
Why should I trust my plans in the 'capable' hands of a shallow fool like thee.
FOLLOW ME--follow and I will lead,
With truth that hurts like stick and stone,
When rats their scuttled ships departed--
Birds of a feather sought their own.
The goose that lays the golden egg--I'll sacrifice and bury it,
If you don't believe me watch me as upon its grave I spit,
Worldly treasures have no worth--but self-respect is beyond price,
And Hell's the best alternative when faced with your fool's paradise.
Some say I bite the hand that feeds--but to these disillusioned eyes
'tis sweet revenge to watch it bleed (it has only fed me lies),
The dead horses you were flogging could not rise and stand upon its legs,
Behold the leper-minstrel has been cured and nevermore shall beg.

Not so political, but I see what you mean JAG.

I agree, it is definitly not easy to come across rather "True" metal heads. But comming across them is definitly what I would consider "A blessing", if you know what I mean. Its always fun to talk about metal.

I complete disagree with Mastadon being one of the bands that Non-metal fans would enjoy. They have very weird time signatures and other very mysterious and dark aspects to them that most main-stream non metal listeners would listen to.

Metallica is definitely one of the best known out of the list. And I just have to say while on the topic, They are highly over rated.

They had no influence on me personally, nor were they innovators of the Genre of Metal as whole.

In Scotland/Britain, I got a free copy of Rocksound recently - a predominantly pop/rock magazine and Mastodon won album of the year.

They're very popular outside the metal community and rightly so.
