I voted Kiss, but only because my not liking them combined with their 2 billion fans makes quite a gap between what I see and what they see. At least they're kind of fun.. Nirvana, I never understood.

Nirvana may not have been that wonderful, but they did open a lot of doors.

The Beatles laid the groundwork for so much that came after them, as did Zeppelin.

Tool's another story - a little bit of commercial success on 4 albums which are not at all commercial (maybe Undertow is, all short songs, easy enough to digest) doesn't make them "overrated" - you have to commit to listen to Tool, much like Opeth. They're not background music. It's the kind of thing you listen to when you want to open another realm of consciousness and find yourself on an alternate plane or somesuchshit.

Just 'cos you don't like the music doesn't mean they're overrated.

You don't have to shred an all-tapping guitar masturbation solo to be talented, nor do you have to play only power chords to suck.

Respect your elders and those that inspired what you love. Without this, you would never have that, and without THIS before this, you'd never even have this which could influence THAT. Does THAT make sense?

Anyway, I think Santana's new stuff is seriously lame (he's a DUET whore). I'd say Kiss, who seem incapable of writing more than one coherent line, and can't decide whether to be evil or homosexual (not that there's anything wrong with that).

And so on..

But sometimes an eclectic taste makes people angry. Tr00 or nothing?

The flip side of that coin is: Just because I think they're over-rated, doesn't mean I don't like the music.

nirvana opened doors for nobody except for people who suck.. they definately effected rock music IMMENSELY, but in a negative way. after nirvana, you could get famous by throwing 2 power chords together and singing a simple melody over it. i bet nu metal would have never existed if it wasnt for nirvana

I think Kiss and Nirvana are the most overrated of the ones mentioned. No one that big has written lamer songs than Kiss, and Nirvana, as was mentioned, isn't even as good as other bands from the same scene. As far as Tool, I've never heard anyone's vocals sound as good as Maynard's so I'm of course biased in my opinion. To me, their music is very deep, reasonably unique, and it usually takes you on a cool journey, especially in the past two albums. Their music is intentionally not focused on technical guitar playing, as sometimes it is the bass that's acting as the main rythm with the guitar just complimenting it. Adam Jones, the guitarist, admits that he's not that good and just makes due with what the talent he has, along with being creative with it. I think Tool has paid their dues to get the credit they deserve, but I certainly don't think they're the greatest band around today.

I voted for Kiss because I think they aren't talented...at all.

The rest, regardless of my personal opinion, has some amount of talent.

As for the comments about Tool, many fans DO overrated the band, but plenty of people underrate them as well. They are a unique band, and although you should realize how much other good music is out there, they are certainly excellent.

i saw tool live and fucknig loved it! the songs felt much better live.

i voted for nile.... they just dont impress me and im contiunally dissapointed because everyone else loves them!

perhaps i got my expectations to high. they just sounded like a wall of talentless noise.

Kiss, and Pantera. Call me crazy if you must, but I've never really gotten into Pantera's music.

As for Tool, people seem to get divided on this, you either like them or you don't. As for me, I'm a huge Tool fan, they got me into the metal world when Ænema came out.

Nirvana.

I own 2 of their albums, both of which I like. But they've done some pretty mediocre/bad stuff. And certainly weren't musical revolutionaries or geniuses as some would have you believe.

I picked Kiss, though Nirvana,The beatles, and Pantera come in a close behind

I picked Hendrix. Most overrated guitarist ever. But anyways, it's funny to see all the metal fans picking Nirvana, what with Cobain being accused of killing the metal era and all;p I like them, but oh well. Tool I think is awesome, but In Flames, ugh. Old In Flames, even Clayman, was killer, new In Flames blows.

Hendrix may be over-rated as a guitar player, but he was a pioneer using the guitar. Even the low end average 80's hair band had probably a better guitar player (technically speaking) than Hendrix. But he had done things with the guitar that wasn't done up until then. So over-rated in what way, as a technical player or over-rated as a pioneer.
