NFL 2010

Okay, so people are allowed to be a dick to me and semi-regularly make passing referential insults about me, especially during the weeks or months that I don't post, yet the second I respond to something negative with something even remotely negative, "things are back to normal?" I've spent about the last year trying not to harass anybody on this forum. In fact I've been one of the more courteous people here for a while. Go scroll through my more recent post history. You're much more of an asshole than I am, and I still don't understand why people like you and King Drunkard are incapable of reading anything I say without thinking "this guy is a fucking asshole" and probably not even take anything I say seriously. Even Einherjar seems to have come around and doesn't dislike me any more, so now it's your turn, unless the fact that I don't enjoy drinking beer or talking about imaginary sports leagues or insulting other people because they like a team that I don't like and try to refrain from talking about other teams when I don't know enough about those teams to really say anything meaningful bothers so much that doing so is impossible (for example, putting the full blame of the Steelers' sack issues on the offensive line when Roethlisberger is as responsible, proven by the sack records in the games where Dixon or Leftwich have started in recent years). I wasn't insulting people, I was criticizing actions that bother me. I'm included in the 'you people' that occasionally talk about teams they don't know enough about to really comment. I try not to though. Let me know what you think, we can be buddies and stuff.

Obviously you and I have different ideas of what being an asshole is, probably due to different upbringing/real life associates or something. I don't know.

Is it possible that the sack numbers adjust also due to an increase in running the ball and play calling adjusted to short "safe" routes because of the ability (or lack thereof) of the replacement QBs, which is to specifically minimize the chance of a sack/fumble. Difference in sack numbers from the starting QB to the backups does not absolve the offensive line.

Anyway, it's got nothing to do with your choice of past-time pleasures, and maybe at this point I can't help reading any of your posts without hearing it in a condescending tone, but you cannot blame anyone who does for doing so, based off of what appears to be your post history from like, at least 07-09.

I am as annoyed as you at comments on the level of those in justin.tv chatrooms during games, but I don't see anything even close to that level other than acceptable cases of fanboyisms (IE: "My team is totally gonna be in the Super Bowl this year") on this board/thread.

As far as who I generally see you be nice to, it seems it is always the other condescending kvlt pricks that occasionally troll through, and I am not alone in dislike of whoever it might be at the time.

I have made no secret of referencing your lists for thrash and death metal recommendations. I give credit where it's due, and I don't where it isn't.

Rounding back to football, whether or not you enjoy fantasy football, matchups/stats/etc. really bring enjoyment to the game to an extra level by making the other 31 teams somewhat more interesting. Making derogatory comments about an increasingly popular and harmless aspect of sports isn't exactly going to win friends.

It's like making fun of a band you think is shitty that the guy you are talking too just happens to like so much he got a tattoo of their logo.

- If you can't read my posts without taking them for what they are but rather for who you think I am, then I ask that you don't respond to my posts, because it's not fair to me. As far as considering me condescending goes, I would honestly like to know if you consider yourself condescending.

- As a Steelers fan, I can honestly say that Roethlisberger is responsible for his own sacks fairly often. I would say at least a third of his sacks could and would have easily been avoided by most other starting quarterbacks in the NFL. This isn't Green Bay last year with a very mobile quarterback and an absolutely porous offensive line (although they, like the Steelers' line, improved during the season). Roethlisberger almost never throws the ball away because he too often reinforces his own desire to try to make plays out of nothing because he actually manages to do just that from time to time. The extra sack numbers is simply a byproduct of his style of play, which brings a positive and negative side. So many drives that should have died have turned into touchdowns on broken plays, and so many drives at 2nd and short have stalled because of him trying to do something that wasn't there. It's a double edged sword.

- We disagree on what is an acceptable level of fanboyism and nonsensical trash talking between 'rival' fans.

- I didn't say I'm nice to everybody, I said I'm not an asshole to anybody. A lot of people I don't say anything to, sometimes intentionally in order to avoid saying something I don't want to say.

- I disagree that fantasy football is always harmless. I know a handful of people who play it within my circle of family and friends and I see the way that it impacts their enjoyment of the actual games (both good and bad). Of course there are good and bad qualities about it, but I find it to be mostly negative for a lot of people, and I simply find it annoying, especially when it comes to supersede talking about the non-fantasy side of football. I'm sorry if you were offended by my disapproval of this unfortunately increasingly popular aspect of sports. I guess I'm not fully aware of how invested some people become in this thing, but to be honest, that only makes me dislike it even more.

You can have the final say. The rest of my posts in this thread will ideally be about football.

Fantasy football gives me a reason to pay attention to other teams, but when it comes to the Saints I'm rooting for them to win regardless of how it affects my fantasy standings.

Basically this. The only possible negative aspect could be when (example) I have Witten on my team and Austin scores the TD. I am happy with a win either way, but would rather the TDs go to my fantasy star than someone elses.

Regarding the Fantasy League scoring, I have been mostly happy with our leagues, but there is one modification I would like to request. I think a sack on a QB should not be a -3 against the QB. I would suggest -1 at the most, or 0. Sacks are obviously a combination of the O-line, the QB, and the DEF. The DEF gets 3, the O-line is not part of FF, so I think the QB should not take a whole -3.

I haven't even had time to look at the scoring from last year as I was busy packing/moving the past week, but don't worry, I always tweak something so it's a completely different experience from the previous years. This also helps to keep everything on an even keel. It wouldn't be very fair for me to know the scoring in and odd and then use it against everyone every season.

As for the argument about this thread and people not talking about football, only about their team, I disagree. I love talking about football in general and do my best to keep up with each team. Ya I'm a Colts homer, but I try my best to stay humble and give objective opinions about every other team (I think most would agree with this). I do agree that the overall discussion about football coupld improve though. The only way this is going to happen is if everyone was willing to do it.

Ok with that aside, Dodens, what should I know about Deshea Townsend? The Colts just signed him. I know he's a veteran backup, but do you think he's still got anything left in the tank?

Also, I'm opening a fantasy thread. I think it'd be nice for fantasy only talks to be honest.

Townsend can be an emergency spot starter, but I think he's lost one step too many to be able to be relied upon as a consistent starter. It's hard to say that, though, because William Gay lost his starting job toward the end of the year to Townsend last year and he performed well. He was actually the first cornerback on the team to record an interception in the last game. His football knowledge can only carry him so far though. He can certainly help the younger corners. He should be a more than capable nickle, and hopefully a serviceable #2.

It'll be weird seeing him in a different jersey, actually...

PS I hope this guy makes the roster this year, which he should now that Parker is gone (though there still needs to be room for Jonathan Dwyer). Isaac Redman was an undrafted running back out of Bowie State that showed a lot of promise last year but also proved that he was a small school running back. His conditioning was poor and his technique mediocre, but he continually displayed the necessary vision and instinctual drive to be a successful running back enough that he landed a practice squad job only because he barely missed the cut (he was considered the 54th man last year). He was activated for one game when Parker was hurt but didn't touch the ball. This year he came into camp looking much better, clearly in vastly superior physical shape, especially in endurance, his technique gets better by the day, and he's proving to be a useful blocking back as well as showing he can contribute on special teams. The problem is that they'll probably have to carry 5 backs to have him on the roster (Mendenhall, Mewelde Moore, Jonathan Dwyer, and Frank Summers should all be on the roster) and that isn't the Steelers' M.O. any more.

Here's a picture of Redman in the backs on backers drill from yesterday

I think Deshea Townsend is a good zone nickel option.

He is slow as all hell, but he's a smart Vet. and the Colts could use anything at CB really.

In Giant news...

Giants signing Keith Bullock was fucking huge.

I hope this guys knee holds up tho.

Osi is gone, his hip needs major surgery, and if he opts out of it and plays he will be playing 15-20 snaps as a 3rd down pass rush extra.

Wes Welker has joined the Patriots training camp. I hope he comes back soon and plays.

Sam Bradford... why is this guy getting more paid than vets? Look at what happend to Jamarcus Russell. You don't want that career path for the NFL.

Word.

Bulluck is a pretty good linebacker (I'm pretty familiar with him since he played against the Colts for so long). I wouldn't worry too much about his knee, I'd be worried about the rest of his body breaking down to be honest, he's getting up there in age. Whether he is better than Pierce, I don't know. I didn't understand why they let Pierce go in the first place only to replace him with a vet two years older who is also coming off of a knee reconstruction. This should be an interesting situation to follow.

Did the Giants draft any linebackers? I don't remember.

They drafted a dude in one of the mid rounds, but certainly nobody of the caliber of replacing Pierce with any equity of talent. They do have two young guys named Goff and Sintim out of whom I liked what I saw last year, but I can't remember if they were ILBs or OLBs. Either way, I thought the signing of Bulluck was a very smart move after they missed out on McClain in the draft.

They 'let' Pierce go because he had a very serious neck injury that, even following the requisite surgery that would allow him to even considering playing again, would most likely have significantly affected his game and playing would have only exacerbated the problem anyway. I think there's a reasonable chance he would have retired after this season anyway if he wasn't released.

Right, I knew about the neck injury but I guess I was under the impression it was one of those "up in the air" type injuries on whether he would ever play again.

It's a pretty smart move to sign a veteran with a lot of experience for their younger players to kind of take after. I've certainly never heard anything bad about Bulluck, although he was a part of that terrible towel stomping posse.

Giants drafted a smart middle linebacker named Phillip Dillard that actually reminds me of your MLB Gary Brackett (wishful thinking).

...and they also signed a project small school OLB named Adrain Tracy, who is extremely athletic but I'm not too sure about his football knowledge. He's basically a risk/project like Jason Pierre Paul, only at OLB.

I can't wait (as usual) for the season to start. Can't stand the pre-season, but it is what it is. I hope the NFL talk can continue on a more cordial positive note??? Like KD said I think the overall NFL talk "could improve". I really don't know what to expect from the Pats and the same for many other teams for that matter. My approach will be to sit back enjoy the games and focus even more on the whole league / overall games in general. should be an interesting year.

and sorry for the lack of fantasy interest...but I just never can / could get into it. Its all good though.
