Not a big Death Metal guy ? Explain why

I'm not big on most Melodic Death Metal bands. Most are pretty garbo, minus some that get lumped in there like Anata or Opeth.

Go on then.

Musically, Black Metal doesnt do a whole lot for me due to how fucking shit its produced (atmosphere my ass.) It works for some bands, but how many of that does it work for? And I dont mean as raw production, there is a difference. Sounding like white static and muddled drums in the back doesnt sound very good.

Corpse paint is cool sometimes. Also black metal musicians and fans are some of the most pretentious cunts next to prog metal fans.

Though there are a handful of bands that just make it work entirely. Bathory, Windir, Darkthrone, Absu, Judas Iscariot, Master's Hammer all make it work.

Try these:

I am a fan of death metal but I'm not 'big' on it (bigger on it than black, progressive, power or folk metal though olol). I've appreciated vocals/lyrics of songs since I was a kid, but appreciating the rest of the music was something I gradually grew into. Even then, not all the way as I don't remotely have an ear for noticing odd time signatures or discerning which songs on a fairly consistent death metal album are 'better' or anything like that. I'm drawn more towards music that stands out as being unique somehow, and decipherable lyrics play a part in that. So when I don't discern as much difference within a subgenre, I can just pick a few favourite bands based on preferred tones/production/vocalists. Then I feel as if I'm getting a good dose of said subgenre without missing out on any songs that might turn out to be favourites. Alternatively it may purely be dumb luck that way more bands in stoner/doom & traditional/NWOBHM use tones/production etc. which I find agreeable.

Given death metal grew slowly on me, there's also the matter of time spent listening to it. I'd struggle to name a favourite death metal song, but maybe I just have to set aside a month of binging on my favourite death metal bands/albums until certain songs begin to stand out more.
I'm 180° opposite to that, but I can actually sympathize with that. Makes sense. There is definitely that stigma about death metal that if you're not 101% drawn to it naturally, like almost a morbid fascination, then it will sound like the most monolithic, tastelessly formulaic caricature of a genre ever created.

There's often that redundant sterile conversation with death metal, you know the one where the critical party says it's all an indistinguishable blob and where the fan says no you just need to listen to it more then you'll clearly recognize each track... I don't know. It's hard to tell objectively what the deal is, but I reckon at least bands like Morbid Angel or Cannibal Corpse (yes actually, CC) can cater to the non deathmetaller in that their songs are songs, i.e. not 50 riffs crammed into a single track quasi-arbitrarily. Azagthoth and Webster & the Cannibal guys make an effort to craft songs, and put an emphasis on identity to those songs. Those bands and, say, a Decapitated. They alternate seemingly betw super technical and furious and catchy simple parts. It would be silly to encourage a new listener to start with a Deeds of Flesh, say. Not because it's more advanced but because it's pure death metal, and the listener needs to relate musically to the band.

No problem. Except you shit on the title track, which is my 3rd favourite song and the part at 3:52 - 4:15 is perhaps my favourite moment on the entire album. Anyway, glad you like the album. What are your favourite tracks?

I personally think black metal is such a ridiculous musical genre to pick to spread the message of religion. The creators must but struggling with some cognitive dissonance.

Ooooff, tough one. I dunno actually, something like:

The Chasm - Deathcult and Procession
Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick and Altars of Madness
Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence
Septic Flesh - Mystic Places of Dawn
Morgoth - Resurrection Absurd
Asphyx - The Rack
God Macabre - The Winterlong
Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes
Poison - Into the Abyss (if it even counts)
Therion - Beyond Sanctorum could replace Poison.

HM’s to the best from At the Gates, Autopsy, Immolation, Incantation, Massacra, etc.

I’ve also been loving the shit out the Deicide debut lately and now have it on par, or perhaps slightly ahead of Legion.

What about you?

These two albums I really need to pay some more attention to. Necrophobic in general tbh.

What about you?

Not including EPs like you have, something like this:
  1. Immolation - Here in After
  2. Suffocation - Pierced From Within
  3. Gorguts - Obscura
  4. Bolt Thrower - Mercenary
  5. Demilich - Nespithe
  6. Neoandertals - Ebu Gogo Gutting the Child
  7. Mordeth - Animicide
  8. Cannibal Corpse - Butchered at Birth
  9. Incantation - Diabolical Conquest
  10. Devourment - Molesting the Decapitated
The position of the top 3 is very fluid, tomorrow Obscura or Pierced From Within could easily be my #1.

I’ve never been a huge Asphyx fan. The first two are classic but I don’t find myself spinning them too often. Prefer Van Drunen’s work with Pestilence, personally.
