Not a big Death Metal guy ? Explain why

Yeah, this isn’t bad. God Cries sounds like a bad attempt at hardcore iirc. That’s mostly what I was referencing.

On the Wings of Inferno is probably the only Asphyx album I can't enjoy, the production is a pile of shit. Asphyx and God Cries are cool, but the latter is barely recognizable as an Asphyx album and Theo should have just recorded it under a totally different name.

Pretty formulaic band so if you like the debut you should enjoy the rest. They knew what worked and stuck to it, like Bolt Thrower etc.

I personally think black metal is such a ridiculous musical genre to pick to spread the message of religion. The creators must but struggling with some cognitive dissonance.

How fair is this really? Paganism and Satanism for example? Black metal is pretty much filled with religious zealotry, just not Christian/Jewish/Islamic in variety. Didn't the singer of Watain stab a guy because he tipped his "Satan isn't real" atheist fedora at a fest?

I think he means Abrahamic religions (obviously not including inversions of that).

I'm not against Christianity in metal in general but I couldn't take it seriously in black metal.

Ooooff, tough one. I dunno actually, something like:

The Chasm - Deathcult and Procession
Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick and Altars of Madness
Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence
Septic Flesh - Mystic Places of Dawn
Morgoth - Resurrection Absurd
Asphyx - The Rack
God Macabre - The Winterlong
Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes
Poison - Into the Abyss (if it even counts)
Therion - Beyond Sanctorum could replace Poison.

HM’s to the best from At the Gates, Autopsy, Immolation, Incantation, Massacra, etc.

I’ve also been loving the shit out the Deicide debut lately and now have it on par, or perhaps slightly ahead of Legion.

What about you?

since when are at the gates not a lock for top ten DM for you? a truly disgusting development

since we're doing this again i guess:

at the gates - sky & fear
the chasm - deathcult, procession & conjuration
fleshcrawl - descend into the absurd
necrophobic - the nocturnal silence
atrocity - longing for death
demigod - slumber of sullen eyes
torchure - beyond & essence
autopsy - severed & mental
pestilence - consuming & malleus
deicide - s/t

No problem. Except you shit on the title track, which is my 3rd favourite song and the part at 3:52 - 4:15 is perhaps my favourite moment on the entire album. Anyway, glad you like the album. What are your favourite tracks?
OK I'll squeeze this in here (quite off-topic but, really quick): I'm quite seduced by the sound and concept of the album in general, it's like a dark night in a castle with glimpses of light, it's adventurous but plain (doesn't feel cheaply epic) - and there's about 5 or 6 parts in the album I find are worth playing the whole thing, besides other good enough parts that I enjoy the full songs. Such parts for me, (and the buildup to them):
2:54 (simple but beautiful) - intro at 10:00 - 12:58 (beautiful) - 16:43 - intro+verse at 20:48 -

I'll reiterate this is melodic death metal for me. It's how I appreciate it at least. I get the same sort of feel from this as I do old Inflames or Amon Amarth (not melodeath per se but deathmetal that is melodic), not the same feel as Burzum or Immortal.

I know :(. I dunno, I never want to listen to it anymore. It has 5 amazing tracks that I love, but its flaws have become more of an issue for me these days (especially "Claws of Laughter Dead" which I find jarring in a bad way, but also the title track and "Night Comes Blood Black"). Its best tracks are better than most of the albums that made my list for me so perhaps it should be in my top 10.

Interesting, it's basically a pure black metal album to me. And it has way more in common with Pure Holocaust than early In Flames and Amon Amarth to these ears. Their following two albums are much more death metal influenced.

Anyway since you enjoy it you could also try:

Dawn - Near Solen…, Slaughtersun
Vinterland - Welcome my Last Chapter

I think I remember you saying you don't like Dissection, but The Somberlain is also really good.
