Old school death metal

Great list but I would generally contest the order. Without being too specific here is one example: Eucharist's debut should not be below Convulse's first album.

Does it really matter? There are people who form opinions based on how they liked the album as a whole more so than how it fits objectively into the grand scheme of metal.

I should really check out some of those albums.

I've been listening to Morpheus - Son Of Hypnos for the last two days since I got it, and it really gets better with repeated listens. At first, I didn't care for some parts that seemed a bit disjointed or fragmented, or other parts where I didn't feel blastbeats were needed or a vocal line that seemed odd, but it all makes sense in the end. It's a very fulfilling listen, and not exactly the standard fare as far as Swedish Death Metal goes.

I love the vocals on Son of Hypnos. It took me a few listens to fully hear the guitar because it's quite muffled, but after this it unearthed some really great shit. You're right though, tis a very unusual Swedish DM album

It's funny, I kind of randomly stumbled upon a used copy that was listed in a distro and of course I felt compelled to buy it. The only copy I've ever seen up on eBay went for over $70.

Well Dazed and Brutal did say criticism is welcome so I just threw in my own two cents.

I haven't had a chance to really listen to the Morpheus album much but it seems okay after a couple listens. Nothing really outstanding though.

not reading the entire thread. ill just say these are essentials

Asphyx - The Rack
The Chasm - From the Lost Years
Tiamat - Clouds
Carcass - Necroticism
Bolt Thrower - For Victory
Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick
Edge of Sanity - Orthodox

random recommendations:

Pan Thy Monium - Dawn of Dreams
Grotesque - In the Embrace of Evil (yes,, some consider it black metal, whatever)

Son of Hypnos is good, but vocals definitely aren't my preferred style. I find the previous EP, In the Arms of..., to be far more rewarding. Unfortunately it's a vinyl only release and is rare as fuck.

After more listens Son of Hypnos is indeed pretty damn good. The riffwork reminds me of early At The Gates in its chaotic and heavily tremelo-based nature. The vocals are, however, much too loud in the mix.

I don't know, after a couple of spins, I didn't have any problems with the vocals, especially since they're not an exact duplicate of every other Death Metal band.

I don't mind the vocal style at all, in fact I really like it. However I still think they are too loud in the mix when compared to the rest of the instruments.

Has anyone here heard Necrony? Atypical Swedish Death Metal which is obviously hugely influenced by the likes of Necroticism - their sole album, Pathological Performances, is well worth tracking down for avid fans of the style.

I have searched for this release since, well, forever.

i have a question:

Who do know why bands like Deceased and Cancer changed their composition?

I'm asking it cuz they nevermore were the same, and i consider the first album of both the best of their carrer

Autopsy's Mental Funeral is the best death metal album ever. this cannot be disputed.

Well, we all have our opinions on the indisputably best death metal album ever made:

byrne: At the Gates-The Red in the Sky is Ours
Solipsist: Immolation-Close to a World Below
Dazed and Brutal: Demilich-Nespithe
Malignance: Demigod-Slumber of Sullen Eyes
Mort Divine:same as above?
Necuratul-no idea
V5: Lykathea Aflame-Elvenefris
Carcassian- Carcass-Necroticism
Killbot: Obituary-Cause of Death
J-Asphyx-The Rack
Death Delirium: Sentenced-North from Here?
JMann: Eucharist-A Velvet Creation
Ben_t- Massacra-Final Holocaust
Me- Cadaver-...In Pains

Yay to diversity!:p
