Death / Thrash -> Nekromantheon.
Although it's more Thrash with a death edge.
Best (oldschool) thrash band = Coroner

Black Metal? Taake was pretty awesome from what Podgie showed me, but good luck finding their albums. :erk:

Also, you can never go wrong with Coroner! :kickass:

Another death album to go for? Was thinking either their debut or the last release (the one with "The voice of Soul" on?)
Is Arise worth getting?
And an Annihilator album after Carnival Diablous?

Get "The Sound of Perseverance". NOWNOWNOW. Yes, it does have "Voice of the Soul". And its (arguably) their best album. Other than that, I'd say "Spirtual Healing" should be next if you don't have that one already.

I like "Arise". The first three songs are amazing, and the rest does drop off considerably, but its a good album nonetheless.

Every Death album is arguably their best :p

Anyway, here's a few black metal essentials (with album recommendations, because I'm nice):

Tsjuder (Desert Northern Hell), Emperor, Taake (Hordalands Doedskvad), Bathory (Under the Sign of the Black Mark), Shining (V - Halmstad, VI - Klagopsalmer), Carpathian Forest (Black Shining Leather), Satyricon (Nemesis Divina), Mayhem (Deathcrush, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas), Den Saakaldte, Watain (Sworn to the Dark), Dissection, Melechesh, and I'm going to stop now...

Oh, and check out Absu's Absu album. It'll blow you away.

Good list, but you've forgotten Ulver's Bergtatt! That is one epic album.
(It is one of the best albums i have heard. Ever.)

Check out this album!

(Burzum - Filosofem is also essential IMO.)

Does nobody else think black metal is just really funny at best?

I remember when I first heard this song and I was sat about drinking with mates and we all cried laughing. The clean vocals are so funny.

De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is awsome. Black metal are a demanding genre which requires you to focus on the music. Anyway, if you only find it funny, it is not the genre for you.

Try this song:

Yeah but it is true. If you find the music only funny, then it isn't the genre for you?

Doesn't matter to me really. As long as I get to listen to black metal.

No you're right. But I produce music so it's difficult for me to take it seriously. I can't quite understand where people catch on really. The out of tune guitars, needless folk instruments, masses of reverb and bad vocals don't add up in my head. Do you just force yourself to listen and then it catches on? Like King Diamond.

How can you say the folk instruments are needless? They create a great atmosphere. Who is to decide which instruments are allowed? I just can't understand how you can say that they are needless. Is it just because they are not a part of the standard guitar-bass-drums-vocal set-up?

The same goes with the vocals; atmosphere. You say the vocals are bad. Well, that is 100% subjective. If i say Matt's vocals are bad, does that mean they are bad?

Regarding out of tune guitars. Even though some releases have out of tune guitars doesn't mean the majority of black metal has it.

In the beginning i forced myself to listen to it. After a few days i was addicted. Nothing's like walking alone in the woods with Bergtatt on the mp3-player. When i close my eyes and listen to some good black metal, the music takes me to another world. It's not supposed to make you want to headbang or mosh. Black metal is different from the other metal-genres. Tthe way i would sum up black metal in one word would be ; atmosphere. No other metal genre can offer that to the same degree.

No... Because I don't only listen to metal and use that band set up. I make prog music too so there's a lot of strange stuff I use. But theres moments when folk instruments just do not fit at all.

Post metal has atmosphere for me. I wasn't attacking you there mate... Just questioning.

I'm not much of a fan of Black Metal. Listened to the song Dan posted, and thought it was amusing at best.

Then I started searching around for the more obscure Black Metal for more shits and giggles, and came across this because of the awesome song title, which some of you may appreciate:

Sounds so similar to every other "classic" Black Metal song I've heard, and I'm finding it hard to find stuff like this to be that amazing tbh. What's so appealing about music like this? Maybe it's just that I'm not used to the genre and I haven't listened enough to it. It all comes down to personal taste tbh.

Just throwing just bands out there...everyone's taste is different but here are some bands I enjoy

Black Label Society - Everything but their last album which sucked imho
Belphegor
Be'lakor
Bathory
Blood Red Throne
Clutch
Corrosion of Conformity
Dark Tranquillity
Dying Fetus
Hypocrisy
Naglfar
Necrophagist

It fits in my opinion, but anyway, lets agree that we disagree :)

I get a little enthusiastic when discussing black metal:p

metallicdistort. Remember that there are big differences between the bands. I only listen to black metal atm, but i still find the song you linked crappy.

Im really interessted in hearing what you guys think of this one. No harsh vocals.
