Romeo or Petrucci?

I think that if you swapped Romeo into Dream Theater and Petrucci into Symphony X, neither would result with anything good. They're both amazing guitarists, but why compare?

the only thing bad about DT is James Labrie, that guy has got to go!!! IMO of course :)

I agree with that:) James sometimes gets so damn annoying and I can't stand him when he sings live  and I won't vote both guitarrists are amazing on their own right (though I gotta say I preffer Romeo's work) that's all :D

When I first heard SymphX I thought that Petruci was much better. Now I think he is only marginally better, but Romeo is a better composer, songwriter if you ask me. Petrucci just has a bit more technical ability I think. But I am liking Symphx's style a bit more than DT's at the moment overall.

Ok azal stop whining :p

lol

I do love him....I think Freak Kitchen is fabulous...Dead Soul Men has been lodged in my CD player for the past two months.

But he definately sounds too much like Vai for me too consider him anywhere near the status of a Romeo or MacAlpine.

In my opinion Azal, Mattias is probably the most creative guitar player out there today. Who else would think of using a dildo or a remote control to play the guitar, and make it sound cool? His solos are probably the most amazing I have ever heard. For example listen to the solo in Porno Daddy (from "Move") and tell me he isnt the most insane guitar player today. He also plays with incredible feeling and passion that few players can match. I highly recommend that you get Freak Guitar to really know what i am talking about.

Everyone else check him out too.

i think there is hard to compare them , they both are gods , and play also very different guitars,

They are both my #1 . guitarrists

I agree (not the most insane but he's up there) but that guy is a freak

It seems quite obvious that Michael Romeo is a far superior sweep picker as well as tapper. I rarely ever hear Petrucci do anything except for insanely fast alternate picking.

See that's where your wrong. SX style is more classical/prog but DT is more Prog-rock/metal. So I think due to the genre Romeo does more soloing...to compliment the music. And JP doesn't have to do as much because he's trying to suit the music....not show off. Plus have you seen the instructional video by JP? The sweeps are phenominal. Tapping isn't really JPs thing....I'm sure he could do it if he wanted. Romeo is equally good but I'm sure they don't surpass eachother, nor should they be compared.

Id HARDLY call the sweeping in RD phenominal. Petrucci has the big flaw with his sweeping that people who arent great sweepers have: he avoids the 3rd when doing large 5 or 6 string sweeps.

I don't agree with most of what you said... "SX style is more classical/prog but DT is more Prog-rock/metal" .... how can you possibly associate Dream Theater with metal when you don't associate Symphony X with metal? Symphony X consistently has heavy riffs in just about every song. Dream Theater does heavy stuff probably every other song.

Also, don't refer to an instructional video... Petrucci probably did multiple takes to pull off the sweeps.... have you seen the DT DVD? he completely misses the sweeps during the Fatal Tragedy solo... and no... that wasn't a one time thing... when i saw them play Fatal Tragedy when on tour with Satch, he totally missed the sweep again. On the other hand, the Smoke and Mirrors intro was flawless both times I saw Symphony X last week, as well as the multiple sweeps Michael romeo incorporated into other solos.

I don't like dissing Petrucci, he's a great player... believe me, he's much better than I will probably ever be, but in all seriousness, it's quite obvious that Romeo is much more skilled when it comes to sweeping. Seeing both players live and comparing their abilities in a live situation was enough to convince me.
