Stories put to music?

I'm going to suggest Final Fantasy VII. It's amazing. Would also fit in with the release of Advent Children (which was great, regardless of how thin the plot was).
If I knew that video games were valid for suggestion, I would've said Chrono Trigger, but I still stand by my original sugestion.

Hi this is my first post here, but I have been reading these forums for some time now...but I think that maybe with the darker tone that this upcoming album is taking that a concept concerning Dante's levels of hell may be interesting. I am also interested if this is possible going to be a double album considering the amount of time thus far that the band has been working on the album. Thinking in these terms maybe it would fit more of a paradise lost/paradise won theme...with disc being the dark side (so to speak) and the other the light side, but with an over darker undertone throughout the entire work. I am very interested to see what the band will be coming up with in thier next work as they have gradually improved thier sound through each release...especially starting with DWOT and overall downplaying thier earlier neoclassical sound into a more original sound which I think is best expressed through V and The Odyssey. I think this is one of my most anticipated albums ever considering that they have been at work with it for such an extended period of time and of the reportively 2 hours worth of music written (double album?).

First off, welcome to the world of being a member, and happy first post.

Second off, Iced Earth did an amazing song already about Dante's Inferno, called "Dante's Inferno". It also happens to be my favorite song by them!

The whole double disc thing sounds like a good idea in theory, but the way you put it, it sounds like each disc is a representation of each possible outcome of the final battle at the end of V, depending on if the victor was Ptah Khnemu or Montu Seckhmet. Actually, that would be amazing!

A double disc album would be a gift from Zeus. It would be so amazing, but we really can't expect that much..... even if Symphony X is the greatest band ever.

Isn't Animals by Pink Floyd based on Animal Farm?

Ya...I think so...it has the Pigs (who represents the Bolsheviks), Dogs (who would be the secret police) and everyone else as the Sheep. This is based on the fact that Animal Farm (I believe) is partially based off the Russian Revolution. Anyways, I think alot of these topics would not really be fitting for a band like Symphony X and all of thier music has been based around mythological themes.

Kazahana mentioned Final Fantasy VII. Now there is something I'd love to hear! Aside from the fact that it's a video game, the story and characters are more briliant than most movies are.

I'd love to hear something more based on the Arthurian works. There'd be endless material there to choose from. But I love Accolade and Accolade II so much, it would be hard to hear anything else objectively and not compare.

Also, an album based on the book of Revelation would be awesome. I know some bands have touched upon this already, but maybe SX could take some of this material and write an original story based upon certain parts.

OR, further still, it would be interesting to hear them do a work based upon real life events. The one that comes to mind immediately is Dead Winter Dead from Savatage (based on the Bosnian war). With so much controversy and opinions about the state of things today, it would be interesting to hear how SX would approach this muscially. It would have a more universal, emotional resonance to listeners. But then, I don't know if they'd want to get into the political area of things.

Mythology and medieval stuff will become a major cliche in SymX lyrics if they continue it too much. They're progressing musically, I think they might want to do the same with their lyrics.

That's a really touchy subject. Everyone's got some strong opinions on that, and their opinions may not be universal. On the other hand, that's not to say they shouldn't express themselves and their feelings...I'm sure they could come up with a good way to depict it.

So mythology lyrics are to Symphony X as the Lord of the Rings is to Blind Guardian? We've all seen how many LoTR songs BG made, and they're all still amazing. I personally think that it will take quite a while for Symphony X's songs to wear thin of the Mythology lyrics.

Maybe they should take a que from Arjen (THE) and delve into something vastly different. How about doing a song/album based around the ups/downs of a relationship? Or a specific person in relation to society?

Ups and Downs of a relationship sounds horribly EMO, and would never fit a band like Symphony X.

Although 1984 is my favorite book, I have a hard time seeing SX doing it. SX is a band that has power and passion, and that book is mostly centered on the bleak and hopeless.

As for the Dante/DWOT thing - "music of the spheres" wasn't necessarily Dante. I'm pretty sure Pythagoras (yeah, the same guy as the triangle theorem) thought up most of that. Back then, they thought the universe was laid out in a perfect and symmetrical way, and the ratios and measurements of the spheres were equivalent to the frequencies in musical harmony. What an awesome bunch of thinkers.

Symphony X has already shown some knowledge, if not admiration for, Edgar Allen Poe in King of Terrors.

I think that a song with the lyrics being that of The Raven would be sweet.

That's probably my favorite poem too; it has a really good rythm to it too, and would sound excellent in music form. Symphony X would make it amazingly awesome.

Another cool thing for them to do would be to make up their own story and put it to music; which could very well be what they're doing since they've been working on the current album for quite awhile. Almost a Mars Volta approach, but more metal.

Yes, that analogy is perfect. LotR is totally cliche. No matter how much ass BG kicks, I have to roll my eyes if they write more of that stuff. There's just so many other things to write about, that sticking with the same subject gets old really quick. Just my opinion.

You guys act like every song is about LotR.

Well, maybe not. When done in a very particular way, it can have amazing results. One that comes to mind is Dreaming Neon Black by Nevermore. Now how's that for the darkness of relationships? That is one gut wrenching album, and yet the story deals with the dark drama of love in a manner that not a lot of emo groups would use.

My point is, there's still original ways in which this same, retread topic can be expressed. I'm sure Symphony X could do something creative with this if they wanted to.

Sorry. Most of their songs are. I'll shut up about it since this seems like a touchy subject. :Smug:

Not even "most" of them. I may be wrong, but I can't think of a single LotR song on ANATO. Their songs come from sources including Dune, Dragonlance, Viking mythology, Stephen King--and the ever-present religious-based lyrics.
