Maybe a sludge album?
Crowbar or Eyehategod, I would vote for.
Maybe a sludge album?
There's still too many utter classics missing to vote modern sludge or more Opeth/Katatonia/Agalloch kinda stuff in imo. Where's King of the Dead, Ample Destruction, Morbid Tales, Show No Mercy, Bonded By Blood, The Red in the Sky is Ours, Pure Holocaust, Psalm 9, Relentless, Saint Vitus, Volume 1, etc.? All those and so many more would be far more deserving than, say, Crowbar, Dream Theater, or even the amazing Disembowelment.

I just don't see the list like that. Just because an album is older or more influential (which is a bad measure, since we are at a particular point in time and therefore cannot judge newer releases by that criterion) doesn't mean its better. Bands like Opeth, Agalloch etc. have accomplished things of the highest caliber- stuff that I consider on par with the great prog rock albums of 70's with regard to composition, concept and theme- which is why they deserve spots on the list.
While I appreciate the influence of an album like Morbid Tales (and therefore will not vote against it), I do not think in itself it qualifies as a great album. That's even more true for a band like Venom (who I don't think are very good). So in short, I don't see a problem with voting for great albums of the last 15 years based on the quality of the album in itself.
