The Official Movie Thread

I agree that he's inconsistent, but I've watched dozens of his movies because the good ones are just so damn good it's worth it. I actually haven't watched Sun Scarred yet, so I'll put that on my list.

If you like his less violent side, I suppose you could try Ley Lines. It's another one of his more dramatic films and one of my favourite works of his.
I'll check that one out. Also been meaning to see One Missed Call... I passed over that one back when it came out because I'd heard it was his "mainstream horror cash-in" and not very good, but a friend of mine recently told me that it starts out being terrible and boring for the first half, then turns into an almost completely different film and some of the best work Miike has produced. So we'll see.

State of Play - Decent political/crime thriller. Noteworthy enough to make a post of it anyway.

Push - Could have been more as the plot was a bit muddy but I appreciated that it didn't try to be more than it was and it kept the big-budget, serious feel to it.

It is cheese, and it's more of a questionable-budget movie that wants to be the next Matrix or something than an actual big-budget action flick. It basically sucks. Even Joss Whedon can do better. I thought Jumper was a lot more enjoyable despite that fucking douche Hayden Christensen being a completely unlikeable protagonist.

Aside from Crank 2, D9 is probably the most fun movie of the year, at least of what I've seen. (Taken was more fuckin' gratifying than fun.) Starts as a mock-documentary and turns into a videogame. You can't go wrong with a dude crawling in a mecha suit equipped with a gravity gun (HL2 anyone?) and stupidly powerful human-exploding weaponry.

500 Days of Summer: Despite being sickly stuffed with indie culture references, this is probably the best 'love' movie I've seen in a long time and reinforces Joseph Gordon Levitt as the best young male talent in Hollywood.

Up: Wow, this was hugely overrated. Great opening sequence but only sporadic moments of humour and pathos afterwards.

Harry Potter 5: meh

Le scaphandre et le papillon: Interesting, original but uncompromisingly bleak, making it a realistic but difficult to like film.

about that last movie you mentioned; its English name is Diving Bell and the Butterfly right?well if thats the movie, I believe I have previously raved about it. I loved the movie beyond belief. The filming style was incredible, and the story was quite something. Beautiful

I just watched that recently as well. I enjoyed it very much and it made me feel bad about whining about things in my life. the shots through his point of view in the beginning were very effective at conveying his confusion I thought. Plus, the speech therapist chick was hot.

also a great film. Usually I dont like war movies of any sort, but that was a great one. It managed to capture life as a soldier, and the recklessness of the main character was incredible. Great acting as well mo

The Push trailers did bring Jumper to mind. I did see that in the theater, and it was fine for eating popcorn to. Nothing to really remember.

It's kind of like a bunch of big-budget good movies were sitting around having a sandwich and Push just walked in, sat down, and said, "Wassup bitches?" It THINKS it's up there with the greats and it has the large budget feel to it, but its roots are still showing. I thought it was better than Jumper mainly because of the way it was shot.

I've dedicated too much time to the movie.

District 9 rulez!!

That's the one. Sounds like it didn't quite have the emotional impact on me that it did on you (although my mental state at the time probably wasn't conducive to fully appreciating such a film) but the direction was among the more innovative and deft that I've seen for a while.
