The Official Movie Thread

Explains why Dragged was low.

hey i like dragged quite a lot, but i tend to respond most to instinctual/primal genre filmmaking and zahler's the polar opposite, very self-conscious and calculated and writerly. he goes so far in that knowingly pretentious direction that his stuff becomes its own weird distinctive thing and i admire him for that, but it does go against my typical tastes i guess (not just in movies, in everything). there are still things i love about it (especially mel, he's so fucking perfect for that role lol) but i feel like i would've loved it more when i was 19 and jerking off over no country for old men, as it kept reminding me of that movie albeit with some obvious differences. i wouldn't be surprised if a rewatch bumped it higher though, like it has with his other movies.

and yeah i won't bother defending the beach bum much, it didn't even go down that well with harmony fans lol. i just love that harmony korine at 50 years old or w/e is out there making some utterly retarded quintessentially floridian big lebowski knock-off and shooting it like he's found god. i don't think there's any big name director who gives less of a fuck what people think of him, for good or ill.

@no country for old wainds did you know Order of the Phoenix is also Daniel Radcliffe's favourite HP movie? You're now confirmed as his alt account.

that makes us like the only two people who feel that way probably. films 3 and 7 are the other acceptable options imo. i like them when they're dark and desperate and not fagging about with digressions into high school melodrama and magical gimmickry basically.

The Dude was a laidback and chill guy. Moondog is just a spazzed out retard. i dont really see much similarities there outside how they kind of look and talk. There was nothing deep or special about that movie and acting like there was because of some kind of pretentious reputation the director has is laughable and pretty damn dishonest if you ask me. So yeah no need to lie to yourself, that movie was shallow as fuck.

I haven't seen The Beach Bum, but have to say, this pretty much summarizes my views of Korine generally.

i don’t like TBB because of who made it, i was just stating i admire his career long commitment to niche retardation lol. obviously it’s pretty fucking dumb, it’s a stoner comedy at the end of the day, i like it for the vibe and look and attitude and humour to be basic about it. i also get why most people hate it haha, it’s pretty lowbrow by any standards.

i’ve still never dared watch trash humpers

Watched these over the last couple days:

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind - Classic and still goes down well all these years later. Charming in every way imaginable, beautiful visuals, cool world, definitely highly recommended for anybody who loves old school 80's animation. Very likely it'll make my 1984 list.

Minnie and Moskowitz - My second John Cassavetes (I think) and it ruled. I love his raw and loose style, the disregard for structure and his choice of actors are awesome. Cassel rules! Also I'm starting to think the Safdie brothers owe a lot of their style to the man, especially with regards to their first two features.

Lizzie - Wish I had seen this back when we did the 2018 game, would have definitely made my top 10. It's tense and at times uncomfortable, violent and paired with a perfect brooding soundtrack that allowed everything to breath when it needed to. Perfect cast and the final act is as brutal as it should be. Kristen Stewart and Chloë Sevigny are amazing together.
