The Official Movie Thread

Finally caught two movies I've been itching to see for a while:

Azrael
I'm a Samara Weaving fan, and she fucking brought it here. Short runtime of an hour twenty or so, no dialogue at all unless you count the dude speaking that made-up language (and even then, it's not strictly dialogue because she doesn't talk back). Pretty brutal violence, not action-hero-y but sufficiently badass, and an unexplained backstory that gave just enough hints to cast a compelling sense of reality in an otherwise very batshit plot. This felt like a smart action-horror film without being pretentious--and a pretty heavy metal ending, I thought.
Gotta love that they chose to show the goat baby/antichrist/whatever the hell is was; I saw a bunch of comments on forums saying shit like "So, Azrael was the villain all along!" And my feeling is, sure, you could read it that way--or, you could read it as the cult she was part of chose to cast her as a scapegoat (pun maybe intended?) and in doing so forged her into the villain, at least in their terms. Either way, cool.

I will admit that the inclusion of the truck driver had me thinking that maybe the cult was just making everything up, a la The Village. But of course, that didn't really make sense, and I'm glad they didn't pull any shit like that. It does leave one wondering who the hell that guy was though.

Ash
sci-fi horror from Flying Lotus, this wasn't a terribly good film but damn was it fun to watch. Pretty bad acting and a weak script, but the visuals were stunning at times (aside from some shoddy CGI, but honestly even that felt kinda endearing in its cheapness.
The monster effects were pretty good, I thought. At times, it seemed like CGI but then at others it looked practical. The lighting makes it hard to tell. Some viewers might be annoyed by that but I thought it worked. Overall, a fun, acid-trip horror set on a weird planet. It helps fill the void until Panos finally finishes Nekrokosm, if he ever does.

Dude FlyLo made that on a budget of like a million bucks and probably a big chunk of that went to the actors. Surprisingly elaborate for a lower budget debut. I really enjoyed the mix of practical effects and strangely nostalgic video game-esque CGI tbh. You could tell he was influenced by late 90's/early 00's survival horror games, pretty sure he openly cites Silent Hill iirc.

Azrael rules, I rented that last Halloween when it was brand new. One of those 'we put the lead actor through a gauntlet' movies that we don't really see anymore. Samara is constantly running, hiding or fighting, constantly covered in blood and dirt, and like you said she has no lines. I've not rewatched it since then though, I need to!

I watched Heads Of State last night.
John Cena as POTUS and Idris Elba as UK PM. What more could anyone want for this world?

lol did not realize he made that on a budget of $1M, that's pretty impressive. Maybe also speaks to why he had to go with no-name/B-level actors. I mean, I really enjoyed it, despite it being structurally messy. I can definitely see the video-game aesthetic, that makes sense. And given FL's credentials, it sometimes had a music video vibe. None of that was bad, per se, it just didn't cohere narratively. But who cares, it was pulpy fun.

Azrael has been on my list since it came out, glad I finally got to it. Great flick. Not sure how much more it will reveal on rewatches, but I'd still do so simply for the fun of it.

I just got around to watching this. It was on that YT site with a heap of Aus and NZ movies on it that someone posted ages ago.
Based on a book by Tim Winton and made in 1998 it's fucking weird, strange, dark and interesting.
Roxburgh and Otto make a weird pair and the old man (Barrett) is like so many silly old farmers who know nothing but the land.

I've only just started watching the ones I stole, I wont need to revisit for a while.

Watched Stiff and The Brush Off based on books By Shane Maloney
Movies are co written and produced by John Clarke (stars in the second one too) whose political comedy in this country stood above nearly everyone else. But these aren't laugh a minute comedies, they are crime stories as well.
David Wenham does some silly shit while trying to save the political arse of MP Mick Molloy. The even pulled a cameo from Steve Bracks (then Labor leader of Vic) and Barry Jones scores himself a toilet scene.
Neither should be considred must watch but they aren't a terrible way to kill 90 mins.

Still watching stuff I got from the original Aussie/Nz YT site.
Watched Snakeskin the other day. That's one weird arse, fun movie.
The chick in it ends up playing the psycho ex g/f of Charlie in 2 and a Half Men a few years after this movie and it's easy to see why they chose her for that role, she pulls off psycho so well.
I loved the little side story with the baby Nazi fuck counting the death sticks (crosses) on the side of the road. I laughed at how that ended!

Art the Mouse? Willie the clown?

Despite those involved I really didn't expect much from this but it's fucking hilarious.
Maybe I thought this was going to be just another poor out of copyright attempt like Whinnie The Pooh from a couple of years ago, I don't know.
But it was much better than Whinnie. The back story and history was handled well and the pissed off rodent idea was well executed.
Now I'll have to wait for the sequel with Minnie.

I watched that new Aussie serial killer flick Dangerous Animals the other day. Bloody good time, strong cast with Jai Courtney playing an entertaining Mick Taylor type maniac. Directed by the bloke that did The Loved Ones and The Devil's Candy.

Only complaint is that it maybe could've been more gruesome with a higher body count, but still worth a watch if you're into the whole ocker comedy horror thing.
