The Tech Question Thread

My DVD player died. I'm buying something new today. Do I need to get a BD player or just get another good ol DVD player? My TV is 720p. I buy Samsung shitz. Their DVD player is $100. Their BD player is $300 not including an HDMI cable.
What do I do?

I don't know much but may I suggest trying to find a region-free version of whatever you find you like!

if you mean BluRay than its a waste for a 720p tv ... it needs 1080p

and yeah, get a Region Free player ... about 79 buuucks for a Pioneer. probably useless for you though ... unless your wife is Polish too :loco:

I've been thinking about getting a Micro SD card for my mp3 player but I keep reading about the horribly slow speeds of these things. I've never used a Micro SD card. Are they really that slow or are people just complaining about the write speed? If I put some videos on it, will I be able to watch them straight off the thing?

they're not inherently slow but you should probably get a name brand card (class 6 or whatever) to be sure. no problem.

the question is why are you THINKING of getting a micro sd card? do you have any other options? if your mp3 player takes regular sd cards then just get those. i suppose maybe you have a player with built-in memory and also a microsd expansion though

So I'm finally in the market for a new laptop.

Currently using a 5yr old 1.73 ghz Sony Vaio w 80GB memory, 1GB RAM. I can probably get another 5yrs out of the thing, but the DVD player just went out, the internal mouse is kaput, the battery is fried (replaced it, remained dormant unplugged), not to mention a multitude of other fritzy functions which I can't recall at the present. Any of you LaPortes have any recommendations for under $600. The only necessity which I require is that the screen is 15 inches+. Netbooks are for those who own a Prius.

I'm using a Dell. I've had lots of problems with them but their warranty has always covered everything. Hell, last time I had problems, the whole damn thing went to shit. My model was old enough that they didn't make them anymore so they gave me a newer one. Everything got upgraded.

BUT, I have had too many fucking problems with these things. Even if they have gotten fixed.

I just realized none of this is helpful.

2009 Dell 1545. Never had any issues. Under $500 including shipping (got that shitz FREE because they screwed up the order).

Just make sure you put ubuntu on it

As I was surfing newegg for 30 mins for various pc particulars, I heard this OS name dropped several times, what's the hooplah good sir? Lads, I also decided that spending $500-700 for a current notebook to surf the www and to download Michael Cera flicks is simply not worth it. I'm going to keep this new Vaio for another 5yrs, and just pick up an external dvd drive, new mouse, and a pair of speakers. May also revisit that battery issue. Fuck succumbing to this consumerist fap fest which is clowned down all our throats!

Ubuntu is an operating system that's free, aka as linux. I don't think I can ever go back to windows.

One downfall: No really good media players for music. The libraries suck.

Eh, I never had a problem with Windows 2000. Plus I've finally found media players that rule immensely. Foobar2000 for music & KMPlayer for videos. What do you do on the net that Windows hinders?

It's more that I have full control of my computer and it's quicker. My computer is pretty damn slow on Windows, yet quick on Ubuntu. There is nothing wrong with Windows, it's just that I like full control of my computer.

there are tons of used bargains on CL also. 200-300 bucks for pretty new laptops. in NY anyway.
not sure how Los Amigos fares.

yay ...

If I want to have an internet connection but don't have (or, more accurately: cancelling) my cable connection, what are my options?

Providing you have wireless capabilities, piggybacking some naive person's wireless internet connection (not very dependable) and/or Border's, Starbucks, "Free Wi-Fi" places, etc.

hahahaha yeah, my friend steals his neighbor's connection like that. He acted like it was completely acceptable.
Barnes and Noble is completely free.
I was thinking more along the lines of one of those USB devices. What are those? Sprint? ATT?
I need something substantial and constant for school. I can't drive to B+N every time I need to study or email a paper or whathaveyou.

ps: libraries also have free wi-fi.
