the "tell us about yourself" thread

My name's Joe, I'm 34 years old and I live in Dutchess County, NY. I've been into Metal since like 1980 or so. In my younger years, Metal was all I would listen to, but as time went on I started appreciating other styles as well. Being a bass player (I play a 6 string bass) really opened my eyes to other types of music as well - classic rock, earlier progressive stuff, classical music (Bach rules) and even some newer stuff.
I would say my favorite types of metal are Thrash and NWOBHM stuff. A few of my all time favorite bands are Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Slayer, Pink Floyd, Lynnard Skynnard, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimi Hendrix. As far as newer stuff goes, I am really into Children of Bodom, Lamb of God (these guys are amazing musicians) and BLS.
I've been in a ton of bands, both before during and after a 6 year enlistment in the United States Marine Corps. About a year ago, I finished building a digital studio in one of the rooms in my house, and I am just starting to get material for recordings I plan to post on my site (www.deadcoldday.com). All the material will be instrumental and feature the bass guitar as a prominent instrument.
My other hobbies are tattoos, Harley-Davidsons, gaming (PC, XBox and PS2), cooking and growing hot peppers in the summertime.
That's about it...I don't want to be long-winded...

To all our newest members...welcome to Old-School...we're glad to have you.

JB

Looks like I'm late again:

I'm 27 years old, I live on the North - East Coast of South Africa in a town called Richards Bay. I moved here for working reasons and find myself alone in a non - metal inviroment so the UM has bacame my Metalchurch.
My 1st taste of metal was the Appetite for Destruction album, a guy's brother in junior school bought it when it came out and did not like it so he gave it to me, I hope he is the happiest guy on earth wherever he is today.
I cant pick my one favourite band because it changes along with the moods I'm in, but it will be along the lines of Zeppelin and Floyd. I am very passionate about music since it's my only real interest, I also play guitar but I'm not a pro or anything. My collection is starting to build up again, but it hurts me to buy back stuff I already baught previously since I've been robbed twice. I mostly only have vinyls left and the rest is up on Soulseek for viewing.
I also like skateboarding, bodyboarding, playing golf, fishing, drinking and driving, the waves here are excellent for bodyboarding but I'm not as fit as I used to be.
I have a big tatoo of Eddie infront of the crystal ball on my right sholder, it's designed so that death is on my back and the candlewax down my arm, I don't have any piercings though.
As many of you know, my mom stays inland on a lodge where they keep and breed live lions, cheetha's and lynx's, it's pretty cool even if you're South African, cause we don't see alot of them anymore.
My brother works in the USA on a farm, so the music that I don't leech off of you guys, he sends me, thus you have yourselves a Zululand Metalhead.

With that said, thanks to all of you for your informative input on new albums, bands and stuff in general, I log on just to come here!!

P.S. Dodens - Tolkien was a South-African too :D

Definetly! Bass is NOT easy by any strecth of the imagination!

That's right, I can play guitar but I can't play bass. It's easy to play SIMPLE bass lines just as it's easy to play simple roles on any instrument. To play bass properly is not easy at all.

I'm a shitty guitar player but can play bass decently, IMO a bass player has to know his role alot of times nowadays they simply dont ... ppl try to put it in the forefront were it doesnt belong, its complicated Bass is a whole different monster than Guitar

Okay, so if you call yourself shitty, then I'd assume one of your downsides is timing, which is the most essential thing for a bass player.
Also, the strings are harder to press and pick, the average guitarist hands aren't used to the force needed to play the bass properly...
And many think it's easy to hold steady 8th or 16th notes, while it's very tough to keep them as even throughout the song section, both dynamic and rhythm wise...

Hey Marine - your website looks cool! Very pro looking. I also liked your "rant" page.

Much appreciated Greeno...much appreciated. I have a good friend ("Splinterhead" on UM) who is a solo artist as well, and he happens to be a VERY talented musician as well as graphic designer...he gets all the credit for the actual design. He took my ideas for the look and feel of the site and did a great job. Hopefully I'll have some works in progress posted soon...

Thanks again for the positive feedback...

I dunno, It's just every time I get a hold of a bass I write something new.
Then I give it to my friend who is my bassist and let her play it and mess with it if she wants to and new stuff is added to pieces we were working on.
All I can say is that it kinda came easy to me, I played for 3 hours a week ago and sorta got used to it and when I picked up my guitar it felt like I didn't know what I was doing. It felt too small, and I wanted the bass again.
For some reason I picked it up two months ago and I was writing new shit and converting old stuff to it without trying hard at all in the same day I picked it up, and have never really played bass before. I liked it alot and am going to get one for myself pretty soon.
