What type of bike/rack setup is that, and how far did you go?

Answering two questions with one picture:

Plus some words: that's the Pacific Ocean, just west of Portland. I rode there from Chicago, about 2600 miles. The bike is a Cannondale T800, designed for loaded touring. Tubus front low-rider racks, standard rear rack, 4 Arkel panniers + handlebar bag.

Basically the complete opposite of your rig! 27 gears, STI, and 70-80 lbs. when loaded like that. I'd like to try out a fixed-gear sometime to see what all the fuss is about, but I'm afraid that it might turn me into a hipster doofus.

Fun fact: two seconds after I took that photo, a big wave rolled in and dumped the bike right in the ocean! I think I've still got salt in the rear derailluer!

Hey Tully, where in Iowa did you ride through?

Yeah, I'm not Tully, but in case you still care: I rode through the part that has the corn in it. Duh. Can't you see that from the picture?

Oh, more specific? I entered in Dubuque, and went out the northwest corner. I don't know if I even went through anything worth mentioning...Cedar Falls/Waterloo I think was the biggest city. It basically rained all four days I was in the state, so that was generous of them.

skyrefuge ... you are my hero. holy fuck ... 2600 miles.

I am sure you have a more detailed travelogue with more photos ... point me to it!

Man, my ass is sitting on a chair that is touching the floor of a building that is in Cedar Falls.

Ha, damn. You guys have a mighty fine library there in Cedar Falls. Probably the best one of the whole trip, and let me tell you, I stopped at a lot of libraries. Fantastic bathrooms, I seem to recall taking a prodigious dump. I actually went through some surprisingly dodgy areas in Waterloo, but Cedar Falls seemed really nice.

When did you pedal through? By the picture it looks like mid-summer sometime, but I don't recall getting very much rain this year at all.

"AUGUST 2007 WILL GO INTO THE RECORD BOOKS AS THE WETTEST AUGUST ON
RECORD. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 10.08 INCHES SET BACK IN 1998. THERE
WERE 16 DAYS WITH MEASURABLE RAINFALL RECORDED. THERE WERE 7
CONSECUTIVE DAYS /18TH-24TH/ WITH MEASURABLE RAINFALL AND 4 OF THOSE
DAYS HAD OVER AN INCH OF RAIN EACH DAY."

LOL. I actually didn't know it was THAT bad until I looked it up just now. And yes, apparently I timed it perfectly, being in Iowa from the 19th to the 24th! But yeah, if you aren't riding a bike all day and trying to sleep in a tent at night, it's understandable that a week like that can go by without much noticing.

I am sure you have a more detailed travelogue with more photos ... point me to it!

Of course! And thanks for being interested. But beware, if you think I'm verbose here, you haven't seen nuthin' yet. Looks like I don't have a link to the photos from the main page, so I'll include that too, as well as a direct link to my journal entry that included Cedar Falls, and as a special treat, a link to the entry where I got poetic about campground toilets. The Google Maps route still shows my planned route and not my actual route, but once I got out of Iowa they were pretty much the same.

If you ever have half a thought of doing something like this, and get the opportunity, do it. It's awesome.
