I'm actually ranking the following drummers for talent, diversity in styles etc etc.

1. Derek Roddy (Hate Eternal, ex Nile)
2. Henry Ranta (The Defaced ex Soilwork, ex Chimaria, ex Terror 2000)
3. David Haley (Psycroptic, Ruins, The Amenta)
4. John Longstreth (Origin, ex-The Red Chord, ex-Skinless, ex-Possession, ex-Angelcorpse, ex-Exhumed, Dim Mak)
5. LOPEZ!!!
When did Henry Ranta play in Chimaira.. I wasn't aware of that. But wasn't Chimaira drummer Richard Evensand that played with Soilwork?!

But Derek Roddy... he's just fast as hell, nothing more.

[EDIT]

Metal :

-Peter Wildoer (Darkane)
-Nick Barker (Dimmu Borgir)
-Martin Lopez (duh)
-Henry Ranta (Soilwork)
-Teemu Laitinen (Throne Of Chaos)
-Gene Hoglan (Death, SYL)
-Richard Christy (Death, Iced Earth)
-Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater)

Others :

-Neil Peart (Rush)
-Virgil Donati (Planet X)
-Stewart Copeland (The Police)
-John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)

Not the best drummers of all time for sure, but I like their work. Sorry 5 isn't that much...

It's astounding to me that a lot of Opeth fans seem to think music was invented in 1990. Come on, some Neil Fucking Peart anybody?
Neil Peart is probably the Godfather of progmetal drummers, period!

Anyway, here is my list :
1 - Neil Peart (Rush)
2 - Virgil Donati (Planet X)
3 - Mike Portnoy
4 - Bill Bruford (ex Yes, King Crimson)
5 - Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden)

Cheers !

sorry, but a rediculous topic. The drummer has to blend in with whom ever he is the drummer in. The most proficient drummers are probabily jazz based, in my opinion. Yes Bruford was good, Portnoy, is good, or course Neil Peart (lyrics man too), but they are no better than say,
Ric Lee (yes, who I hear you say) from ten years after,
Ginger Baker or indeed
Ringo (a much maligned drummer, but was actually quite good).
Would you say John Coghlan from Status Quo was a great drummer? Hmmmmm

My #1: Derek Roddy.. Shame he's not mentioned much here before! Check out his website for movie clips and stuff! Great and versatile drummer, anything ranging from deathmetal to jazz, to groove-stuff..

Honorable mentions: Martin Lopez, Flo, Kai Hahto, Danny Carey, Joey Jordison, Nick Barker, Brooks Wackerman, Ton Dijkman, Carter Beauford, Trym and probably some more i forgot..
