USA vs Europe

its also obvious that europeans realize international travel is important. hence their huuuuuge rail system and cheap airlines like ryan air.
This is just stupid. The interstate highways are an impressive accomplishment, and the government runs Amtrak at a massive loss so that people can get around. There are relatively cheap airlines here, and there are now those really cheap bus routes that run for under $20 between major cities.

I don't see any way here that the US could work harder to facilitate international travel. The border with Canada seems quite relaxed. If you want to go to Mexico, it doesn't seem to be a problem. It's just that a huge chunk of the population lives 1000 miles from Mexico. There's no cost effective way to get people to Europe.

first off, amtrak SUCKS. trains are always ATLEAST 2 hours late. ive used amtrak dozens of times and i always have the same problem. and its not even cheap anymore. amtrak needs to be privatized.

TIACN: you missed the point completely. the point is that its way more affordable. a flight from liverpool to salzburg is way cheaper than a flight from NYC to toronto. shit, its cheaper than a flight from NYC to LA! i dont know how you thought i was talking about reliance on international travel. i was talking about ease of use and cost.

and yes, american culture sucks. yay mcdonalds! yay nike! :puke:

I can't say much about Europe's mass transit systems, but when I went there this summer we rented a car in Frankfurt and I was very impressed with not just Germany's highway system, but of Poland's, Czech Republic's, France's and Belgium's as well.

I must be just you, then.

A flight from New York to LA is also a lot longer than a flight from Liverpool to Salzburg. What tyhe fuck is your poing?

Here is where you prove that you're a fucking idiot.

- Public transportation quality varies by region. Any idiot should realize this, but it takes a special kind of idiot to miss this abundantly obvious fact.

- Equating American culture with fast food chains and high gross retail shoe companies is pretty retarded. In other words, you're a dumbshit. Way to discount centuries of brilliant literature, architecture, philosophical, economic, and political theory, inventions, and painting, as well as decades of music.

my overall point is that americans need to see the world no matter what the costs. its cheaper than you think. i flew from san fransisco to oslo for around 700. then use your contacts from the metal community and stay at their place.

see the world, its worth it

How the fuck does saying "Americans suck" and "All American Culture sucks" help to make this point? Everyone needs to see the world, not just Americans.

Guess what, you aren't telling anyone anything that they don't already know by saying "you have to see the world". Fuck, practically everyone says that one of their goals in life is to see the world. You might as well walk around telling people to try ice cream and do things that make them happy.

So...$700 each way, plus food, plus the currently rapacious exchange rate, plus additional transportation, plus the money you're not making by being away...I don't see how one could spend less than $2,000, and more likely $4K or $5K depending on the length of stay. When I was in high school, the exchange student program cost about $1,500, and that was when the euro and dollar were basically even. That's with a discounted plane ticket and a family to stay with.

I could go to Europe, but it would probably cost me my entire life savings. Since I need to be looking for a job and a place within the next year or so, I need money laying around. Random things happen. I got into a fender bender two years ago, and it cost me $2,000. Many, many people can not make such a major financial decision like world travel unless their parents are going to pay for it.

its not nearly that much

i spent around 1000 on my entire 10 day trip to norway. that included air, food, train travel, and spending cash. shit, i'm not even spending 4000 on my 2 week adventure around europe staying at high end hotels! i'll do the math on that and show you guys just how cheap it is. 4000 isnt even close.

I don't have hundreds of dollars to spare at this point in my life. I won't be going overseas any time soon unless my family finds a way to vacation there (which I've been pushing for, probably London or somewhere in Germany).

I don't much like Europe, and I doubt I'd much like America either. I'd much rather live in New Zealand and avoid all that political posturing where I can listen to music in peace up on some deserted mountainside overlooking beautiful scenery.

literature- sure there are some good american writers, but europe has those too. push
architecture- sorry, but skyscrapers just dont compare to the cathedrals and castles of europe. europe wins
philosophical- both have their greats, but europe has the US beat, just because the originals set the stage for the rest of us. socrates is a hard act to follow. europe wins
economic- ok, capitalism is cool and we dominate the world market. US wins
political theory- the european parlimentary system is heavily favored over US system. europe wins
inventions- the US has made alot of important inventions. but we cant even compete with the rest of the world now. but the US wins for creating things like the phone.
painting- europe wins hands down. i dont think i even have to explain that one
music- blues and jazz are great american past times. but this whole rap/hip hop thing is rubbish compared to what europe started. the various era's of classical music, METAL, etc... europe wins

those are just my opinions ofcourse
