Augusto Pinochet seized power from the democratically elected socialist government of Chile on September 11th 1973 in a violent CIA supported coup. He ruled the country until 1990 and was responsible for attrocities and crimes against humanity.
In the first months following the coup, Pinochet's regime held 250,000 political prisoners, including socialists, trade unionists, pro-democracy campaigners and their sympathisers. Under his rule, arbitrary military executions and "disappearances" - where people were kidnapped by the secret police, tortured and murdered - became commonplace.
His regime is thought to have been responsible for at least three thousand such disappearanced as well as the routine torture of political prisoners including electric shock torture and rape.
