Dark Tranquillity are far from black metal. They really don't use the keyboards that way, and the music is completely different.
Character is amazing. Very complex, and it really takes a few listens to "get it". It's fast heavy, yet melodic and emotional. They really can't go wrong in my book, and with Character they just did everything right. Their maturity really shows through.

Opeth (easy example) use keyboards in a very similar way, it's derived from a black metal sound but they're not black metal. It's still massively guitar driven music that they make, besides DT becoming a black metal band would need to be facilitated by a massive image shift.

Well not all black metal uses symphonic elements in the same way. Dimmu, cradle of filth dont use it in the same way as burzum.

Black metal bands tend to feature more symphonic music in there songs while melodic death metal bands tend to feature more melodic music. I'm not saying the barrier can't be crossed, just that tend to be the case. As always you lads know more than me but that's the impression i get.

Just because they have keyboards, doesn't mean they're symphonic. I think it would be more accurate to call it electronics than keyboard, since that's a more suiting definition. It's real subtle sounds that you find once you dig into the music, and then you see how much it really adds.

It doesnt have the same touch as lost to apathy i dont think. trust me ive given it hard listens because i love DT. but it did nothing for me.
