I've been wanting to get this off my chest for a while:
PORCUPINE TREE:
Now, I first heard Trains 3 years or so ago. I loved it. Still do. There is practically no 'metal' moments in that song. It's a real mellow, chilled out song with banjo's and other exotic shit. Then the real problem came with Deadwing. It just failed to do anything for me. The 'metal' chords Wilson uses should stay with Opeth, they just sound so forced on Deadwing. Take the song Shallow. I can not remember one riff from it. In Absentia is far better but na this band isn't prog rock's best kept secret. No way. Songwriting is very dull at times, the chorus of "Halo" an example.
SOULFLY
Metal made by cavemen. Devoid of thought, talent. The thing is people think they are genuinely heavy. Guitar riffs are the blandest, most repetitive shite to have ever shite upon Stratford-upon-shite.
NEVERMORE
I've seen a few other people say Nevermore are hit and miss. It's definately miss for me. I really dig some ideas and the talent is brilliant. But again I can't feel the atmosphere, it sounds cluttered to me. I don't rate the vocalist anywhere near as high as Townsend, Akerfeldt, Gildenlow. I just haven't heard anything special from them. I'll listen to Dreaming Neon Black before I confirm judgement though. (apparently it's their best work)
MASTODON
Again, a conflicting issue of styles. Is this band meant to be heavy? I couldn't feel it. Are they meant to be experimental? Couldn't hear it. brilliant drumming though. Just don't see how they are rated so highly.
and again NIRVANA
Why? Just why? The second I heard 'Man In A box' from Alice In Chains I couldn't believe Nirvana made it as far as they did. Alice in Chains were from the same movement (grunge) but were better in every aspect and I still rock out to them today. I believe theres people out there who simply like Nirvana for their reputation. Because surely after listening to two songs you get some understanding of how weak this band was.
Other bands/albums that confuse/irritate/plain bore/ me
Radiohead - that song creep, whats so special? someone?
Nine Inch Nails - like listening to a metronome and watching paint dry. Funny this is I like Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt".
Everything 'The Cure' did except Disintegration (even some parts of that fail to convince me)
Dimmu Borgir - Trendy black metal. With no imagination or musical integrity.
In Flames - Clayman album. Simply because a lot of people rate it their best, when Whoracle and TJR shit all over it.
As much as Mike Patton is a damn cool cat, i'm gonna have to say Fantomas. If you can listen through it I salute you but some of it is unlistenable.
For anyone who doesn't "get" Mike Patton, it's just a matter of what you hear and when. I say download "Zombie Eaters" by Faith No More. He doesn't use acrobatics, and it still showcases his versatility, going from a soft croon to a sneering, parent-eating (haha you'll get it) voice. It's just such a listenable song. But I agree for every 4 or 5 really good Patton tracks, he releases one shitter.
