What bands are bands that you just dont "get"?

All this Dream Theater hatred is out of complete ignorance... Open your fucking minds and you'll perhaps enjoy them... There is absolutely nothing to hate about them, and in fact, they put a great deal of emotion into their music... The reason they are so fucking good is because they make it insanely technical but so emotionally effective. I understand if you don't "get" it at first, but don't fucking talk shit about a band you know is fucking good simply because you don't get it and because you see other people doing it.

Anywho, I honestly don't get Katatonia... I've heard 3 of their albums and I don't get anything out of it... (but do you see me talking shit about them, NO, so fucking quit with DT)

I can't think of anything else at the moment... There used to be a lot of stuff, but once you give it time and open up and get in the right mood for certain things you can eventually understand it and enjoy it.

^well, you're pretty much wrong about most things you just said

btw, i'm referring to gayternalmetal

Yes, my opinion is wrong.

I dont like Katatonia cause it is pretty much the epitomy of the soundtrack to "omg my life sucks im gonna cut myself" mentality. I dont like it, too dark and depressing. I can see being depressed sometimes, but why do you want to write such depressing music? I dont find depressing music to be fun to listen to at all. All it does is make me depressed. And I tried this with Staind, I listened to just them for a week and I was depressed as hell. Then I listened to Devin Townsend, and happy I was. And for those of you who think Staind is nu-metal crap and you like Katatonia, try again. They are depressing as fuck and have a shitload of emotion. I cant sttest for the newer cds, cause them um, suck.

I wish Dream Theater's music sounded like it had emotions in it. Its not a tangible idea, so I cant explain it.

Nirvana
Metallica
Pantera
Black Label Society
Avenged Sevenfold

^I'm not stating that all these bands are bad I just don't really see why they are lauded for being so spectacular.

As for Dream Theater... I'm torn on my opinion. There was a time about 5 years ago where I wouldn't listen to much besides Tool or Dream Theater. Dream Theater was my first real favorite band. What grabbed me was how well they blended amazing technicality with tasteful songwriting. I think Images and Words and Awake (one of my all time top 10 albums) are the best examples of this. I even think the critically condemned Falling into Infinity was overall a great album with all around solid and diverse songwriting. I was looking so forward to Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and when it came out I was split in opinion. Half of that album is stunning songwriting while the other half is really boring background comping with Jordan Rudess and John Petrucci doing absolutely out of place and irritating wanking. If these songs contained, say, one, solo section they'd flow a lot better rather than being the display of "look what I can do" (and I do enjoy technical music like Spiral Architect, Spastic Ink, Cynic, Mahavishnu Orchestra, etc). Train of Thought was the clincher for me- boring and lifeless riffs, mediocre vocals, and absolutely needless, mechanical, purely scalar soloing. I haven't heard Octavarium yet. I seriously think Jordan Rudess will be the downfall of this band. I love everything without him, pretty much enjoy all of Scenes from a Memory, and enjoy most of SDOIT, but that's about it. The spark and emotion seems to be completely gone (unless Octavarium changes this...).

:( People say this is actually the album where Rudess is standing out the most. There are barely any solos, and some of the songs sound extremely cheesy.

Very good reasoning though.

Chill out dude, this thread is for exactly what you are pissed off about. It is for explaining bands we dont get, and Dream Theater is one of the bands that a lot of people dont get.

Wow... Just wow.

The names that some of you people are throwing around are just insulting. Radiohead? Led Zeppelin? PINK FLOYD?? Good god... You people should be ashamed of yourselves. But whatever.

Bands I don't get:

Dillinger escape plan
The Rolling Stones
Meshuggah

Yeah I don't get Radiohead, but you don't get Meshuggah?! HAHA.

black sabbath
ozzy
pink floyd
gwar -> they make me laugh... but i dont really understand whats so special about their music...(other than fucking an animal, meat sandwich, and fishfuck)

Nirvana--way overrated. Soft Machine--chaotic and pointless. E.L.O.--legally I wish I could beat them with a lead pipe and let them bleed in the moonlight. They actually piss me off. All the so-called record executives and producers who push this "mainstream" musical drek, you know the Grammy pickers, Billboard losers, all that award show bullshit. They should put all these scum in jail and not let them out until they can recognize true talent. What's happening today in the U.S.A. in the culture of music is a fuckin' crime.

Thanks for letting me know that I'm wrong about them... The Rolling Stones are the most overrated band in the history of rock and roll. Followed closely by nirvana.

HAHAHA, I put on a Soft Machine CD at the CD store I worked at once and everyone wanted to kill me... truly terrible garbage.

Most jam bands:

Phish
Moe
Grateful Dead (although they did have their moments, like "Terrapin Station")
Government Mule

Also:
Kottonmouth Kings
Mr. Bungle
311 (How did they ever get a contract? Their fans are white suburban kids who have no frame of reference for what constitutes good music. They mistake the dub sound for coolness or something.)

Basically for all the above mentioned bands, if your audience consists of cargo shorts wearing guys sporting shell necklaces, you suck.

Now go ahead and flame me for these:

Yes
King Crimson
Frank Zappa
