Mainstream bands recieve high marks because of their popularity, not their musicianship. Suffocation is very skilled and very popular without being mainstream.

To all those lamenting the current popular state of "metal" - take it from an old campaigner, it won't last, and most of the poseurs will drift off when dance music or the next non-guitar based music comes back into vogue again.
Then you'll have the oppurtunity to buy all the stuff that will be "cult" in 10 years time when the cycle arrives again.
