Why does mainstream metal culture suck so much?

When you dress and grow your hair different than the norm...expect to be looked at different.

Maybe that's because you ARE different. Not trying to be an arsehole mate, but if you look different to the majority of people, expect to be stared at.

Whenever I go to Poland, for example, they stare at my red-haired gigantic handsomeness. That's because they're all 5'8'' and brown haired.

Yup.

I just dress with whatever. Sometimes metal shirts, sometimes preppy shirts.

I went to Ozzfest once with my gf, and we just dressed like we do all the time. I didn't put on "metal clothes" (i.e. death metal bands, and obscene shirts) just because I was going to the concert. People kept staring at us, and one girl was like "are you sure you belong here?" Haha...it was kinda funny watching people look at you different in that setting when all the time they complain about being viewed differently on the outside.

If you have T-shirts you wear for shock value - you're getting the reaction you want when people look at you wierd. It's so freaking annoying when people cry about being looked at differently when they went out and got tattoos, piercings, etc etc to MAKE themselves different.

Made sense to Cookiecutter.
OK, here's the Sparknotes version.
Metal rules because it fights mainstream culture and if it ever gets popular, it stagnates and dies. If it stays underground it kicks ass.

My fault it makes sense, I was a little buzzed last night!

i dont care people wear ambercrombie or hollister but those people(i hang out with the "popular kids")but they dont like my darkthrone shrits

one is for selling, more or less, the other is for art, more or less. take a guess which is which.

I don't wanna sound like a prick but that basically means that he is right. Metal-Archives is a pretty strict when talking about what is metal or not. Hell, they are the jerks that won't include a good amount of Industrial Metal bands including Rammstein (Still hate them for that).

Yeah but they've been getting less and less strict over the years. Notice how they're now letting metalcore bands in like Trivium, As I Lay Dying, and Bleeding Through?

If I like a certain "mainstream" metal band, then I will listen to it purely because I like it and im not going to stop enjoying it because its mainstream. But recently I have despised the modern mainstream metal Culture because of all the worthless bands being produced and hailed as the so called "saviours of metal". I recently visited the MetalHammer website (dont ask why) and heard some guy from Trivium talking about the new album and how they dont want to scream because they dont sound like Metallica and they will get more money for not doing so.Which I think is utterly stupid, Im not a fan of Trivium but I dont think they should change there music just to make more money.
That is the what is happening in metal these days and it will continue to be like this which is a terrible shame.

Probably because most Mainstream Metal Bands share their radio space with crappy pop bands.Even on mostly metal stations. There are a few decent radio stations that don't do it that way but not enough.

Going with the flow is the best thing anyone can do(I finally know), regardless I no longer hate cultures. I either like something or do not. Mainstream metal can be awful just aswell as underground. Either you can play and create or you can't regardless.

There is better music to listen to than just sitting around listening to underground metal or even current mainstream music. Don't get me wrong I like underground and mainstream metal bands. I do not know much about current music unless it is older bands. I am concentrating on finding bands that really craft and evolve there music because they are genuine musicians and want to be around because they strive. If you want to be around making music you can't always avoid your surroundings or go against the grain just because you want to be 'metal'. Music is about making music not about being something.
Well said,my friend. Going with the "flow" for me is just not possible. I WILL NOT follow others.

Metal in general it seems (more than any other genre) has been plagued with misinterpretations from the beginning. So its natural that this is still the case today.

For the most part this is a good thing as it keeps out the majority of ignorant idiots of the world, but then again metal still has Pantera fans so we're never completely safe.
